My garage has been converted so I can only park in my driveway. My dryer outlet was not in use since I converted to a gas dryer 20 years ago. Since it was vacant, I ran an extension cord from my 30amp circuit to the front of the garage and mounted my portable charger. Now I'm upgrading to a Juicebox 48. Waiting on the permits to upgrade the main panel.

is the consensus that it's very bad juju to install the home charger in the garage while planning to charge in the driveway with garage door closed on the cord? or is it just slightly bad juju / many people do it/ not that big of a deal? ...because my Texas basement aka garage has never fit a vehicle in it.

@wolfsbane: Most of the time we charge our cars outdoors, using a charger inside the garage. That wasn't part of the plan. We just filled up the garage and haven't had time to clear it out.

We cut scraps of plywood maybe 1.25" x 7" to go on either side of the cord before we close the garage door. That way the force of the door is never 100% on the cord.

No sign of cord damage yet, as far as we can tell. Your mileage may very.

We use something like this. My wife generally just leaves her R1S in the driveway and charges under the door (has been doing so for over a year with no issues).

I had the very same question. I bought a cable guard that you slip over the cable so the weight of the garage door sits on it instead of only the cable. Just make sure you look for a thicker rubber one instead of a 3D printed one that could be damaged due to bad weather.

Ever thought about painting ceiling/exposed stuff black? I was always worried it would make the garage too dark but did a friends house and suspended some of those trendy (not my style) hexagon lights and the place looked AMAZING

This garage believe or not is a detached garage, with no HVAC or insulation, in Michigan. Unfortunately, it only has a 7 foot "ceiling" so instead of doing additional trusscore to then potentially insulate it, I left it open to the rafters, which are fairly dark wood. I have several 8ft LED shop lights secured to the joists in parallel lines, which you may notice in the pictures. The hexagon lights you mention certainly are popular, but I would rather have the focus drawn to what is being lit. I did consider putting some other type of lights up in the rafters instead, but I actually use a lot of that area for storage of spare materials.

I've been putting some more stuff up on the walls since taking those pictures. Metal prints seem to be my best option for any artwork. The Porsche art is a canvas print I framed under acrylic. I have yet to see how it will last when this garage gets 100+ degrees in the summer.

Just saw this (OLD) post.

PSA - REMOVE THE HANDLE AND KNOT FROM THE DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM AND CUT THE ROPE SHORT ENOUGH THAT IT WON'T REACH THE EDGE OF THE DOOR

Why?? Because all that it takes to get in your garage is a heavy wire (think coat hanger) snaked through the gasket at the top of the door to snag the handle and disengage the mechanism.

Keep a small stepladder in the garage so you can reach it if you ever need to during a power outage (or...just stand in the bed of the Rivian)

Some of you have some fabulous installs! I have a 100 year old house with an almost 50 year old panel. It's an over stretched 100A but passed a load calc by a hair using a 50a for the evse. Except for AC there are no major appliance loads using ng for heating. Short run so an easy install.

The weekend house is even older and got the $100 install with a 14-50 since it gets so little use. Had plenty of cable and conduit left over.

My wife and I built a new custom home and had them put a separate 100amp panel in the garage. I have a Chargepoint Flex from Xcel energy and use their 12-6am program and pay $.028 kwh to charge during those 6 hours. Incredible deal. I pay a small monthly fee to rent the charger, and they will maintain it as needed. We have another spot ready for our next EV, which will be the R2 replacing my wifes Rav4 Hybrid.
