Unfortunately mine did not go according to plan.

Notes indicate an issue with the hydraulic system after the Jounce lines were replaced with the new parts.

I was assured that there is no concern with the now mismatched front dampers, which are visually different, at least with regards to the plastic accordion dust covers. Driving fine and seemingly quieter over bumps, but more driving needed to make sure.

Dropped off on 9/6 for a rotational clicking noise from the rear drive unit, which they could not diagnose and is still happening, but I added this Jounce line TSB and the AC Vibration TSB to the appointment after dropping it off, thinking it would be time well spent to get it all done at once. Nearly a month later and a lot of headaches in a Wrangler 4xE rental, I am questioning if it was all worth the trouble. I think I would be happier if both front dampers were replaced to match each other and guard against potential future leaks due to the apparent accidental overfill and pump failure. But if it's true that the updated front dampers perform the same despite the cosmetic differences, I suppose I can live with it.

I had a fun visit to SC this week. They did replace the jounce lines since it was an TSB and I definitely had the symptoms. The squeak seems gone now which is fantastic.

But when I asked about getting the updated dampeners since I’ve been complaining and have multiple service tickets regarding the rattling since new, and they had an interesting response….

The service manager said the new updated dampeners make a huge difference in the noise, but he could not swap mine because I don’t have a suspension fault code necessitating replacement. He said I could pay out of pocket to upgrade them, but it would be around $16k to do so!!! I guess Rivian is cracking down on people asking for updated dampeners for just noise complaints, I get it, but dang, that is kind of shady too. I jokingly (but not really a joke) told him they’re just trying to get me to trade in for a Gen 2.

Dampers should always get replaced in pairs. But with the disparity in dampers, I would 100% request them all to be replaced. They are vastly different spring rates. My SC replaced all four air springs.

2 different dampers is kind of odd. Won't they react differently to terrain?

$16K to replace two parts worth about $4K total? Is that $12K in labor? Maybe I'll wait till I can find a pair online and just pay someone locally to do it. Of course my warranty would be gone.

I'm convinced the worst offender for sound is the jounce lines and half-shaft play. Had the jounce lines replaced, but no go on the dampers and half-shaft play.

If there is no fix for the half-shafts I will be trading this in when the lease is up, even if I have to pay a mileage penalty.

These types of things won't help resale and thus people like me won't move up...and when I do....very well...might move on. No reason for absurd costs like this.....

I'm not convinced the dampers are causing any of the noise, I think it's the half-shafts sliding back and forth. Male sliding into female and we're hearing the clapping. Literally.

I get that....but that price to replace two front spring/damper units is the part I feel is absurd.

Would the same issue be causing the rocks in the coffee can noise on the dual motor?

It's the half-shafts sliding back and forth. It's a bad design. The single worst thing about this truck.

Can you help me find some data/documentation to support this claim? I follow this logic and specifically asked if there is any concern with the dampers now being mismatched and they said they were the same performance specs, but I had a hard time believing that myself when I noted the visible differences in the accordion boot covers. If the revised Gen1 front dampers are indeed different in their performance or even in the spring rates/valving then I can push for the FL damper to also be changed to the updated version.

I don’t have any data other than I could feel them vastly different. The whole car is softer now. I believe these are the ones gen2 vehicles use now as they have the same PN and this is one of the reasons gen2s feel softer. There is some data that they now use Firestone rubber instead of continental and are manufactured in the states.

I just got new jounce lines / retrofit and also got new dampeners for both sides / retrofit.

It does sounds better along with new halfshafts and hubs.

I am currently at ~ 28,000 miles on my Quad Motor June 2023 build R1S.

I appreciate Rivian and my local service center taking care of this concern.
