After spending way too much time learning all I can about the Comma 4 and the installation process, I’m still a little in unclear on the fuse tap. I get what the fuse tap is and the need to get one with the proper pin configuration and fuse size. My question is - how does the fuse tap connect to the Comma harness? I have seen all the installation videos and read all the online instructions. What I haven’t seen is a photograph of the proper fuse tap and exactly how it connects to the harness. A picture is worth a 1000 words, as they say. Do fuse taps have some sort of universal connective pin or what? I doubt they are all the same. Does the fuse tap plug directly into a port on the harness, or is some sort of adaptor needed? Thanks.

Yes, it plugs directly into the harness connector next to where the USB-c obd cable plugs in as shown here-

All the fuse taps I have seen look something like this. How does that connect directly into that harness connector. It sure doesn‘t look like it would. Seems like there is a missing link. Is there another cable with the appropriate harness plug that connects to female end of the tap cable? Unfortunately, I‘m trying to imagine this whole installation without the benefit of actually having it all in my hands. It’s probably all very simple and straightforward.

The Comma is supplied with what is called Comma Power. It plugs into the obd port in the driver's foot well and into that port on the harness with the molex connector. If you do not plan to utilize that, you can use the molex connector end along with one of those fuse taps if you are comfortable making the modification. If you are purchasing the longitudinal adapter from Lukas, he sells a fuse tap that has the molex connector on it. Otherwise, @gerrylum or I can probably send you one with the proper molex connector.

Aha! It’s starting to make some sense. The molex connector was the missing piece. As I understand it, it would be removed from the Comma Power and the fuse tap would be spliced onto it, then plugged into the harness. Thank you for the info and the offer!

No problem. I may have someone in the Colorado Springs area that's wanting to help if you go forward.

Thank you everyone again for all of the information. In the last few days i have ordered a comma 4, xnor longitudinal upgrade kit, xnor harness with a fuse tap, and a Jankas comma 4 pro mount kit. Much like the person above i put a lot time into researching purchasing/installing the Comma because my wife and i take our R1S all over the USA. Gerry’s youtube videos helped me a lot to make sure i have everything i need to make setup as easy as possible. I think im out around $1600 right now for all of the hardware and for me that will be well worth it if it works as advertised. Side note, i reached out to Lukas to make an adjustment to my order and Lukas was fantastic to work with.

That's awesome! Looking forward to your reports once you have everything up and running!

Out of curiosity, did you order the Rivian-specific Janka mount? https://janquick.com/products/rivian-openpilot-quick-mount

And totally agreed, Lukas is great to work with!

Curious how people are liking the Comma 4 so far now that those appear to be shipping.

I've got a Comma 3x sitting in the box deciding whether I'm brave enough to tackle the install, or if I need to just let the idea go and sell it. Removing the trim pieces to run the wires & doing the fuse tap at the mirror are the two parts giving me pause.

The fact I'm still debating the install tells me I probably should skip it so I don't jack up my R1, but man this thing is so tempting to give a shot & only want to install once so still deciding whether I offload the 3X and go to the 4 if I decide I'm brave enough to tackle this.

Where are you located roughly? If someone is nearby that's installed is willing to assist, would that ease your comfort level? Honestly, removing the trim pieces is relatively easy and most of the time the clips remain intact. The only part that needs a little extra care is removing the camera cover so you don't crack your windshield since it is fairly tight. In fact, you can forego removing it and just run the cable next to it if you don't mind the passenger seeing them.

As for the 4 vs 3x, if you already have the 3x, I wouldn't bother swapping out. The only real advantage is view real estate and even then, after having the 3x for a while before I switched, it really wasn't as big a thing as I thought it would be. I think I only found myself having to look around it a couple of times and that was not for driving purposes, just to look at something my wife was trying to point out. The other benefit is the cooling being moved to the cabin side of the unit, but unless you are in a really hot climate, the benefit is nominal.

Do it, I have 5+ mods to truck and SUV and this is by far best mod. I hate driving other vehicles that dont have it now. Install isn't easy but not too bad. Great tutorials out there to watch. You will get mad, but will be 90 minutes well invested.

I installed the 4 recently (first time user) and really enjoy it. The hardest part of the install was getting the plug in to the self driving unit. Hiding the wire under the trim was pretty straight forward. Would just recommend getting a trim removal tool set from amazon as that made things much easier.

Don't debate about it and just do it! Watch the videos and follow the Google Doc on installation and you'll be fine. After I installed my 3X on my R1T, I also installed it on a R1T and R1S from members of our Rivian Club and another person on Facebook came by to take a look on the unit and asked for installation tips. As Kaos asked, where are you located? Someone in your area may be able to assist if you're intimidated by it, but it's actually quite simple.
