I do have one use case where waiting to buy a car made sense to me...My daughter was looking to buy a Subaru Crosstrek in the summer of 2017. I instisted that she wait until the 2018 models were available because that was the first year that Subaru had Carplay (sigh) integrated. She claimed she didn't need it but I told her it would be necessary for resale. She now uses Waze on every long trip.

So - in your case...If Rivian gave you a date for built-in NACS rather than CCS, that might be worth waiting for. I suspect that's one of the reasons we haven't seen them give a specific target other than "in 2024" - They'll end up with a bunch of delayed orders to avoid having to carry an adapter.

You'll always need an adapter for something. For example if you have a NACS plug and all the supercharger are busy but a Electrify America has 6 open slots for CCS.

The CFO recently said there will be some changes to the battery pack as part of the 2024 production line shutdown/upgrade. But those changes are primarily about lowering the cost of production, so I wouldn't expect revolutionary changes in efficiency. That said, with the pace of change in the EV world, any EV risks being "outdated" within a year or two.
And take that comments with a grain of salt. That's a finance person, not a tech person.

Hard to say. I think/guess the Large and Max pack are the same battery. The standard is likely to be an LFP of some sort. Jury is still out on those. The LFP MY one wasn't the greatest. I'll stick with what's somewhat proven. We are all already riding the bleeding edge on some of this stuff. No need to have things that haven't been tested in the wild. We are all living with that a bit.

800V? It's good and bad. More KW for the same Amperage without needing bigger cabling at the satation. There are still low speed efficiency issues with the architecture that need to be fixed. Availability is spotty for stations that can deliver it and implementing a split pack sometimes halves the charge speed in 400V mode.

Rivian hasn't worked out heat throttling as well as Porsche. The new Macan E is crazy good on heat management and has 800V. That C limit at the cells is the issue. The charging curve on the Rivian is not bad but it's a large battery on a thirsty vehicle. 20-80 being 40 minutes means if it had half the battery like a MY it could be half the charge time at 20 min (roughly). That's super acceptable but we don't get the efficiency/miles that a Tesla does out of the same energy.

I'm going to say what I said on all the Tesla forums for years. If you're delaying your purchase, waiting for the next update. You will wait forever because there will always be a new update on the horizon when the update you're currently waiting for is released.
I think iPhones are a great analogy. As soon as the new model is released (and often times even before), rumors begin flying about the following year's model (which is usually announced about 10-11 months later), rinse and repeat.

At some point, you just have to buy what's available that works for you, and then live with the fact that future update cycles may be different / better & upgrade again when the need or desire prevails, but if you're always waiting on the "next" you'll never be able to enjoy the "present"

Never say never... We have a Model 3 and BMW i3 in addition to our Rivian.. each vehicle is excellent if used appropriately.
The Model 3 and i3 are super efficient commuter vehicles, the Rivian is inefficient (it requires 2X more energy/mile than the Model 3 and i3) as a commuter vehicle when compared to the Model 3 and i3. With that in mind.. I can't tow our boat with the Model 3 or i3, so that's the Rivian's job, along with any trips that need to be made in snow, inclement weather, or hauling heavy loads or cargo.
At the risk of getting off topic, do you have any plans to upgrade the i3 to the iX? Never been a big fan of BMWs (ICE or EV, except for the i8), but really like what they've done with the styling / design of the iX personally.

To be blunt, *any* EV you buy today is "outdated" in the sense that there will always be something better just around the corner. ICE vehicles have had over 100 years of continuous development and few today worry about waiting to make a purchase based on what's coming. EVs are still very much in their infancy and the EV you buy today will be the worst they will ever be.
Honestly ANY vehicle you buy is outdated when you buy it. New tech is always in the pipeline for years before release.

We’ll be waiting a loooooong time for that on our Rivians. ?

Now that you mention it, I hope it doesn't turn out to be the same experience I had with my "state-of the-art 1" thin" TV I paid thousands for a few years ago but, you can get one better and bigger for $500 now. This has been a subject of many of my dinner conversations. Yes, I am the life of the party. :CWL:

On a serious note-tech is exponential so enjoy what you have rather than wait for the next best thing because that wait will never end.

Until I ee the solid state battery, any enhancements are pretty much minor or different options.

Cheaper LFP battery may be available as option in 2024... but i doubt that's a replacement for current battery. Just a cheaper alternative.

The cameras are definitely outdated. The same group who chose these terrible cameras probably spec'd the wireless charging pad as well... I wish they had a R1S lease because to me this is the first iPhone and would then buy whatever they had 3 years from now which would be much better with tech/battery.
