If needed, this is an opportunity for clever aftermarket vendors.
I found that back seats in my 4Runner needed better grab handles and found a vendor making paracord handles similar to this pic. They will come up with a clever solution if there’s a market for it.

Man some of the R2 folks are acting like the sort of fanatics that ruined Teslarati. Not having grab handles (if it turns out to be true) is a legitimate concern. Suggesting the person who uses them should get on better shape or buy a different vehicle is a-hole territory.
I don’t think suggesting to buy a different vehicle is asshole territory. If you need a grab handle on a daily basis and the R2 doesn’t have one then you shouldn’t buy a R2. It could certainly be an inconvenience for some passengers but it’s not a safety concern, just a design decision by Rivian.

Got this from Rivian Support this morning:

"Kristina here from Rivian Customer Support Team, thank you for reaching out!

I can confirm that the R2 will indeed have interior grab handles but the final information about their placements and configurations will be confirmed as we get closer to deliveries, so just stay tuned and check our social sites and official website where we will be updating our community with due diligence.

Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey!"

Suggesting you buy a different vehicle isnt asshole territory. Sugessting the people who need a grab handle dont 'maintain a minimum level of fitness and dexterity' is.

Hopefully that's real and closes out this conversation. If real info, it might indicate there are some other small items that haven't been shown yet.

Ask Rivian Assistant and you get a similar answer.

Q: Does the R2 have grab handles in the front row?

A: Yes, the R2 does have grab handles on the doors that you can use to close them from the inside. This is mentioned as part of the interior door handle design—just pull the grab handle to close the door. You can find this detail on page 47 of the owner's guide.

But clearly it's not talking about the same "grab handles" as this thread.

I wouldn't take the customer support reply as gospel. They're working off a script in the sense that they have access to certain material, but that material always seems to be incomplete and dated. They simply don't have accurate information in many cases. For example I just recently asked about the "Auxiliary Brake Light" that was briefly available in the gear shop last fall, but has since disappeared. Numerous people (including the service center employees) gave me wrong information about that - the right answer is that they don't know why it was removed from the shop and they don't know when or if it will ever return.

Doesn't worry me one way or the other whether R2 has them, but this seems a rather odd reason for why they aren't already incorporated, if it is an accurate statement. Who gets this far into the design and early production without including them? Rivian have already designed lights and speakers into the headliner, so why not grab handles if that was their intention?

Also, the R2 is supposed to have side curtain airbags. How do you put a grab handle there without interfering with the airbags?

How does any other vehicle manage that? My Audi had side curtains and handles as have other cars of ours.

the early mules had them, the receiver for them is still clearly there… supply chain, who knows. It’s clear they’re pushing to not miss the 2026 sales cycle, I’m sure there are still hundreds of touch points still getting tweaks.

My '01 Blazer had a grab handle spanning the entire passenger side of the dashboard. Before she passed, my elderly mother loved that truck (and hated every vehicle I had since).

Maybe we should lobby Rivian to get rid of the gloveboxes and add this, instead? 'cause, yeah. I'm sure people wouldn't find some way to complain about that. 😆🙄

Edit: Just editing my own comment to add - man, did we sure have a lot of buttons on the dashboard back then. Almost forgot what it was like to drive this thing. 🤣
