Actually, it is "behind". They're up to the 2nd patch release already as the test trucks just got 2024.03.02 last night. Most releases we get as .0 and it's even rare that we see a .01 let alone a .02. As a software engineer it makes me wonder what issues came up already in testing, but glad they at least found them before we got the update this time.
'Behind' is subjective. And history indicates it is more 'rare' to to see X.x.0 release.

While several recent releases have in fact been X.x.0 versions, the majority have included a patch or two. Software versioning traditional follows a very similar naming convention: Major.Minor.Patch

Rivian has clearly improved their UAT/QA, but patches are not unusual, unexpected, or anything to be concerned about. Software is iterative. Getting it right is better than getting it right the first time, as some owners unfortunately experienced with 2023.42.

Here are the production releases over that past 2+ years:
2023.50.1
2023.46.1
2023.42.1/2
2023.38.0
2023.34.0
2023.30.0
2023.26.0
2023.22.0/1
2023.18.0
2023.14.0/3
2023.10.1/2
2023.06.2/5
2023.02.3
2022.47.0/2
2022.43.2
2022.39.1/3
2022.35.3
2022.31.5
2022.27.2
2022.23.3/5
2022.19.3
2022.15.0
2022.11.2
2022.07.3
2022.03.1
2021.49.2

Yup, I was one of the ones caught out with 2023.42. And as I said in my post, I put behind in quotes and specifically said that I'd rather see them catch bugs and other issues in testing than release them to the public first. As for my comment that .0 releases were more common, it was the case since I took delivery. I'm not surprised that in 2022 it took many revisions before things were released...their process was still forming. I'll never complain about extra testing before release. My original comment was simply to someone else claiming this release was still "on time" even though the average initial sighting to release was 10 days and we're beyond that at this point.

I watched the video. The quick controls are a very much needed update. Can’t wait.

so this will be my first OTA (just got my truck a few weeks ago). Does the app just send a push notification when you get the update or is there a way to force the truck to check for updates?

Just finished installing the update a couple minutes ago. Looks pretty useful! it looks like they removed the vehicle tab and moved those things into the quick control and the settings menu.

That does look useful, I like the option of having it come up automatically in Park! I just want auto fold mirrors by location, but this seems to make folding the mirrors quicker?

FYI here is the video:
