I am skeptical, but once Toyota decides to jump in and do it right, they will be a force. I think their mistake may be assuming it will be easy. Toyota can hold Ford & GM’s beer.

Didn't GM make some crazy promise back in 2017 to offer 20 EV models by 2023 or something like that?

Let's count GM's 20 EV models since the 2017 "promise":
2017 Bolt
Bolt EUV (basically a fractionally larger Bolt)
Hummer EV

3<20 isn't it?

My bet is Toyota is going to miss the boat on EVs and lose a ton of market share to all the new EV startups.

You simply can’t turn around a company that big, from culture to supply chain, to be 100% focused on EVs in a few years. By then, a lot of pure play EV companies and some legacy oems will have surpassed Toyota.

Their ego will be their downfall

I’m less skeptical than I was before. Their new CEO is bent on bringing electrification to Toyota. I currently own a RAV4 hybrid and absolutely love it and have said here before that if there was ever a 4Runner Prime or (and this is will never happen) a BEV 4Runner, I’d never look twice at an R1S (though I absolutely love the car and the company).

I agree with you though that they may assume it’ll be easy and THAT would be the path to their downfall.

100% agree. I’ve had a few Toyotas and the are great cars and trucks. But I’ll never buy another one for what they did to not only delay their own EVs but to lobby governments to delay everyones EVs.

I agree. They do seem to finally be “getting it” or at least saying the right things. I love my Tacoma just like you love your RAV4, but they have a LONG way to go before they can convince me they are serious. Not only have they simply not offered their customers any EV options worth a crap, they have actively been lobbying against any measures that improve EV adoption and ownership.

Agreed. If they ever get in seriously and not just with a partnership vehicle like they did with Subaru for the bz4x it’ll be game over

This is why vertical integration is so imperative for Rivian.

Realize that I may be in the minority. But I will never buy a legacy oem EV. The only reason they’re going into it now is because they’re being forced and kicked into it. Definitely give credit to Tesla for initiating the change.

But, I see no reason that oems have incentives to innovate in EVs, if they could just stick to their ICE and very incremental approach to “innovation.” In short, f- ‘em. I’m done with legacy oems
