The reveal of the R2 is now official for March 7th. Rivian has teased the outline and some basic details, and there is certainly an expectation that Rivian will stick with a similar design language from the R1 series. Pricing and performance likely will not be anything surprising for Rivian fans, but there could very well be some interesting surprises. This thread isn't for the mundane (smaller oval headlights) type of predictions. Let's hear some genuinely interesting predictions for the R2.

I'll start with a removable roof panel option. Maybe not full Wrangler, but some removable hardtop roof capability. We saw a patent from Rivian for a removable roof system if I remember correctly, and there's no sign of it being made available for the R1.

Love to have a R2 but after constantly requiring repairs on my 2 R1Ts and 1 R1S, plus, the nearest service center is over 400 miles away, Rivian really needs to expand their service centers and mobile service while improving their quality.

I wish pricing would be a surprise, but I expect base price standard battery, dual motor AWD no less than $49,999, outside the mainstream market window.

I hope to see changes that make maintenance and repairability less expensive and doable by non Rivian service shops.

I expect a built in browser w/ subscription internet or subscription video and audio plan from the start.
Manual vent controls.
Adjustable defrost speeds, rather than a single high noise setting.
Some other built in sound system for camping/worksite entertainment. Maybe in a tailgate or frunk speaker or something, no one seems to appreciate or use the camp speaker (mine is usually dead when I try to use it)
Some sort of cool yet functional phone charger to make R1 owners incredibly envious. Edited to add: More cup holders....
A cold storage option.
No roof window or opening except in a high end trim option.
Much better cameras (2K?) with much more onboard storage.

I've heard that's the target market for R3. Quite curious when we'll get a timetable for the next model. I expect it to not be as large of a time gap as R2 was/is.

I want to see 400 miles range on the mid range battery pack. 300 miles for the smallest pack. I think an 800v architecture is a given at this point, so we should see much faster charging times. Beyond that, I predict the following
  • No air suspension but still have at least 11" of clearance.
  • Cloth seats on the base trim
  • 400hp on the base, 600hp on the Adventure
  • front and rear lockers on the Adventure
  • Frunk opening extends forward and down to the front bumper for much easier access. Perhaps tailgate seating as well.
  • A mini pickup version with a gear tunnel. You can't skimp on the gear tunnel
  • NACS port opens automatically at Tesla and Rivian charging stations
  • Eventually a $45K FWD only soccer mom version.
  • Your own life sized stuffed Gary. At least my wife is demanding this.
  • No glass roof on the base version.
  • Carplay. YES DAGNABBIT! RJ will have a come to Jesus, I mean Tim Cook, moment and give us Carplay support.

IMO, if Rivian can achieve a sub or circa $50k price threshold in basic trim package, it would be a massive victory.

Bells and whistles and bleeding edge tech may be interesting and all, but the mundane is exactly what needs to be the priority for R2: lower price threshold, reliability, +1 to expanding RSC capability and capacity. All with the goal of profitability ASAP.

Since Rivian has maintained $40K~$60K price range AND focused around full $7.5K tax credit for the R2, they will not only have to take lots of features out as well as new battery source (read sourced and made in North America).

1) All LFP batteries
2) All mechanical suspension (probably a strut-based with lower A-arm)
3) No glass roof but sun/moon roof
4) No 3rd row and no vented seats (only heat)
5) Base model is either FWD or RWD, and AWD/DM is for the upper trim level
6) Base model range around 275 miles and AWD is around 260 miles
7) Rear hatch/liftgate window that opens (and not two piece gate)

The focus of the model is targeted towards younger working families with kids and being an everyday replacement vehicle for those that own Outback/Forester, Traverse, Highlander kinds of vehicles. It's also step up from Crosstrek, RAV4 and CR-V class of SUV. Also compete against ID.4, EV6/Ionic 5, Fisker Ocean and smaller eTrons/I-BMWs.

Anatomically correct, of course.

I'm really interested to know if they are going to do another Launch Edition for the R2 line and if it'll be maximally equipped or somewhere mid.

I would assume the most difficult or "costly" options would be nixed. Just guessing off-hand but no air suspension, no quad motors, no real wood, no electronic-moving vents, maybe no glass roof? Be nice to see it actually appear before 2026, but who knows with all the people opposing the factory slowing it down. 😞

Biggest upside surprise for me would be late H2 2025 production start. Because the team finds a huge sense of urgency.

Please!!
Agree, but unfortunately, even if the Rivian team has urgency, that does not mean OEM suppliers will feel the same urgency to meet a 2025 date .....

Love what most have said. I would like a very basic vehicle. No glass roof, air suspension, etc. Not sure that we need A/C because the glass roof negates the effects on the R1 (jk).

I got it... Ready for bold prediction...
Solid State Battery 400 mile range charges 10-80% in 6 minutes.... Boom
Why not Toyota is claiming this with a straight face.
