I don’t even use the current capabilities so I can’t say that particular announcement affected me at all. I guess it’s to be expected???‍♂

I'm wondering how Rivian customers will pay for it. If hardware is included with every vehicle and it's a one-time cost for software like Tesla does, or if it'll be a subscription or perhaps even pay-per-use.

That’s a fair question. I can’t recall ever seeing a comment from Rivian on that vs the other services on the horizon. Pay per use would be interesting. I would be on board with that as an option.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
It occurred to me yesterday on my drive back from work that I rarely use D+ features at all.

That’s probably because I am a luddite and am older than The Count’s Avatar, but still.

I like using highway assist if traffic is stop and go on the freeway or completely empty. Anything in between feels too cumbersome.

I test drove a Lyriq with supercruise earlier this month, and the system was quite a bit nicer. Could actually reposition the vehicle within the lane without the system disengaging. Probably my biggest complaint with Rivian's highway assist right now. It's difficult to get the vehicle to steer around road defects or obstructions.

Agree - my biggest complaint is being unable to avoid lane-creepers next to me, especially semis, without disengaging the system. Feels way too dicey around traffic.

It’s great on open roads with limited traffic, though. New lane change feature is pretty cool too.

I agree with MikeHMB that it's more comfortable to use where traffic is lighter. I have used Driver+ a lot on interstate driving, but often do temporarily disable when next to a semi-truck drifting in their lane. And I don't use it in heavy traffic, like others have mentioned.

I have to say I was actually pretty excited by RJ commenting on R2 having more hands-free driving ability. Again, where traffic is light, that would be a real plus in making long distance driving less tiring.

My insider neighbor says they will at least introduce new features like automatic lane change to D+ on the R2 and then intoduce them to the R1 after launch. He believes the R2 needs to have some extra features to itself at launch draw in new buyers, then those features can filter down (or up in this case). I will say, take this with a grain of salt... since he did tell me yesterday that although he knew the R3 would be introduced yesterday, he really had no clue the R3X existed.

All of this. On the open road with little traffic, it's a game changer. Similarly, in heavy, stop and go traffic it's amazing to just let the truck handle things for the most part. In between those two extremes I have to take over too often for the lane creepers. But really, Highway Assist lowers the cognitive load enough for highway driving that it's so easy to cover huge miles without fatiguing as much. I do hope Rivian is able to improve the existing system in the R1s while they increase functionality with R2/3 and I assume the coming refreshed R1 architecture.

Was part of the advertising literature when we bought our R1s too, so we will see if it ever comes to light. I just want something along the lines of BlueCruise and SuperCruise. I don't need or want full self driving, just hands free on pre-mapped highways.

I interpreted as a clear intention of supporting L3.

I would expect it to be by subscription pricing.

I personally don't feel as if it will be useful for me UNLESS it supported highway speeds.

Right now MB sells a couple vehicles capable of traffic-assist L3. Where the vehicle itself takes responsibility for driving until it hands the driving off to you. Where you don't have to pay attention. This only works at low speeds, and as soon as traffic clears up you have to regain control.

Amazing to me that RJ continually emphasizes cutting costs to make R2 affordable, including the charge port location, but they found room in the budget for 11 cameras and 5 radars (plus software development). Guess I'm out of touch with what people are willing to pay for.
