The podcast version of this was released more or less the same time as the Dual+Max announcement. Between no lockers and no 800V I finally switched to Quad+Large from my year old Quad+Max preorder. Dual+Max just doesn't provide enough advantage when it's also likely going to be 165 kWh vs the 180 kWh that was originally referenced, especially not at the quoted prices.

I think the important thing to note is that NO R1 either Quad or Dual motor independent of the battery size will be getting 800V architecture in the immediate future. That's kind of disappointing because in 2021 (maybe early 2022) they still had verbiage on their site that stated that they'd be able to to increase to 300+kWh charging via OTA updates. This means that everyone is stuck with the current low 200 kWh fast charging.
It's disappointing because q4 2021 shareholder said Enduro was part of their 800v architecture.

The website was always very unclear and I think was intended to always say RAN was capable of 300kw, which confused everyone.

What I don't get, didn't get at the time and still bothers me is how they miscommunication with both MotorTrend and C&D with both mags coming away under the understanding that the current vehicles are capable of 300kw and they never had them correct it as far as I am aware.

At the end of the day, the it is disappointing, but I understand the decision I suppose.

Jokes on you now tho.

Not only are you paying the same if not more than people who were pre march pre orders and only went with the large pack— you’re getting less as well!!

no powered tonneau cover. No front plug in frunk.

that’s why I’m waiting for todays ram announcement and I’m looking for a private party who wants to buy the rivian dual motor config. Maybe I’ll get the mini R1S/x when it goes live eventually. Or preorder the actual max pack quad when it becomes available.

Because just being honest doesn’t do well via PR.

I think at this point, I don't see a reason for me to actually purchase the Max Pack truck over what I already have with the quad+large if the Max pack doesn't have 800V charging. Especially if I end up with an early Silverado EV RST in my driveway this year. I'll reconsider the second R1T purchase if they release an even higher horsepower quad motor in '24.

You can't read then...I am a pre-March 2022 preorder holder, so I still get original pricing. The only downside that's totally Rivian's fault is that they said Quad+Max was coming, so I stuck with it. Now I come to find out that I should've dropped down to Quad+Large months ago if not from the beginning and likely had a truck in my garage already.

No, bud, you clearly aren’t paying attention.

powered tonneau is gone. You’re not getting that back. Neither am I if I switch back. I either get nothing or manual. Pre march r1ts also had a charging port in the frunk you could have used. That’s fine now too.

You're not paying for the same price for a powered tonneau as a truck with no tonneau. So if that's a feature you can't live without then that's ok but I don't think that's the majority of people.

Are you saying you have an R1T reservation for a dual max @ pre-March pricing you’re going to sell?

Sorry to be that guy - "kWh" is a unit of energy (like gallons of gasoline). Charging speed is in watts or kilowatts (kW) which represents how much energy can flow per time (like gallons of gas per minute from a pump).

Battery capacities are in kWh.
Charging rates are in kW.

I'm a geek, I know.

I'm seeing less of a reason for an upsell on the Max Pack. If that large battery can't charge in the same amount of time or less than the Large Pack then it really won't save much time overall on those long drives. It's a big cost increase for limited use.

People might be better off using their money on a set of 21" wheel/tires for summer road trips to get that extra range. I wish I can swap the tires at home without a visit to the SC to get the speedo reprogrammed.

I guess you’d just have to settle for an 835 hp truck that can go 0-60 in ~3 sec, wade up to 38”, tow 11k lbs and go ~300 mi on a charge.

It's still going to be years before the fast charging network becomes useful, reliable and plentiful so who really cares about the 800v at this point.
For future proofing (yes, I know that term is "cringe" in the tech world). I like to keep my vehicles for 10+ years, my 4Runner is 11 years old with 160,000 miles. I've cancelled my pre-order for the R1T. I'm going to get another ICE vehicle, maybe a Tundra or Sequoia, until EV towing range and charging infrastructure are more robust.
