I remember Munro talking about a lot of the plastics are painted and how that had to be expensive compared to molded in color. This looks almost like chemically removed paint. Maybe?
It is thicker than paint.

But if the alternative is Ford/GM Igloo cooler plastic everywhere...I will keep mine way it is and be careful.

i had similar issue with my previous vehicle, a jeep grand cherokee. the shifter has a similar material wrapped around the plastic, with the constant touching and i guess combination of the sweat and dirt and chemicals on my hands, it was peeling off. Jeep did not agree with me and wouldnt cover it under warranty.

ya that piece is a rubber coated plastic. still sucks but looks like something caused it to peal away from the plastic.

Hey OP, thanks for sharing. I'm not have that problem (thankfully) but I have managed to scratch the crap of that small strip of stainless metal above your issue area. Apparently my wedding ring catches just right when I close the door. Ugh...

I hope they replace your door panel piece...I bet they will...my experience is they're pretty easy to deal with and forgiving. Good luck!

So it makes sense that this might be a sprayed or dipped color/texture coating that may susceptible sunscreen/chemical degradation. This is unlikely to happen with a color molded plastic ("igloo cooler") or traditional vinyl wrapped interior.

Disappointing. How is one to know what interior cleaning products might cause the same problem?

From the picture you supplied, I noted a bit of bubbling on the edges. It would suggest a possible chemical reaction or contact with a substance that would soften the material.

I had a higher-end vinyl couch that was a part of a bad batch of material from the manufacturer. The vinyl delaminated after only a few years. I did get some warranty help, but from that point forward I chose cow, NOT vegan cow.

Hopefully this is a fluke and my purely theoretical Rivian R1S OC holds up a little better for me.

This looks troubling. I mean, I have an unrestored 1971 Ford cop car with interior that has held up better.

I think it just disintegrated. I hadn't even noticed it until someone riding with me pointed it out. Have had the truck since 5-21-22 and it is driven regularly.
hadn't noticed? how can you not notice that?

I would suggest a leg condom...

Great idea...if they fix it, believe me, I will think about putting something between my leg and the door...

Rivian R1T R1S Interior peeling wAoOy8

There is damage to the handle itself, isn't the handle made of metal? Seems like a pretty serious impact on the handle then.
