That is so annoying! To your point about lights coming on with car doors opening for 70 years, it has been at least 90 years since I recall seeing a 1935 Buick with interior lighting which worked as we’ve come to expect: lighting on with any door open.

Our Rivian’s interior lights work “properly” AFAIK: they come on when the vehicle is unlocked, when the vehicle has been placed in Park, or if a door is opened after the lights have timed out but before the vehicle has gone to sleep.

I don’t understand why someone thought they needed to add such complex logic. What I find most annoying is that when a door is opened at night with the vehicle NOT in Park then the lights don’t come on at all. Why? My best guess is that this preserves the driver’s night vision. If that’s the case, and we already have such complex logic, why not turn on the light corresponding to the seat for each open door?

I am sure it is best practice to put the vehicle in Park before allowing passengers to enter or exit, but the delay involved after tapping the Park button (set parking brake then unlock vehicle then ramp up the interior lights) means that I find many passengers are fumbling in the dark.

This seems like one of several areas where Rivian followed Tesla’s lead and they probably shouldn’t have: power operated vents, glass roof with no physical sun shade, no resume for cruise control, overly-complex logic for interior lighting, requiring jack pucks, no screen projection, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

Gen 2 T owner. My front interior light wouldn't stopped working (along with the hazard light 'button'). I created a ticket but I'm 200 miles away from a service center. After 2 months of waiting I got a VM from the Boise mobile team who said they could come over in about 2 weeks. During that period I got an OTA and it fixed it.

But now my key card doesn't get recognized 75% of the time. I have to take it out of my pocket and put it on the detector and usually move it around multiple times hoping that it will recognize. Not sure how people travel without the cards. I'd be up a creek.

Frustrating 'small things' that add up.

Just one of my overhead lights stopped working. Mobile service replaced it for me at work. Very convenient.
I had this same issue. Same result. If anyone is having a problem with those front map lights, put in a ticket and they will fix it.

When you wrote that your key card doesn’t get recognized 75% of the time did you mean the physical credit card-sized card or your phone?

The Credit Card. If I don't have it, the Truck won't use my phone as a key (maybe it will work 10% of the time - maybe). Which is why I was saying I'm not sure how owners travel without the Credit Card key and rely on the phone only. I've repaired my phone multiple times.

I’ve created multiple tickets for my overhead lights over the last year and they still only come on half the time. All my overhead lights not just the ones by the rear view mirror.

I have the same issue as bagsofcole. I had an appointment but pushed it out because my biggest problem is the spare tire compartment handle freezing when its real cold here and I can't get to my spare tire, emergency tools, and towing gear. Its not cold enough for that to happen anymore so bringing my truck in for them to tell me the handle works just fine in 50 degree weather is just a waste of my time. Once my truck does go in, they are supposed to be looking at the overhead light problem and I will report back.
Side note, I definitely carry a credit card key with me all the time in case my phone doesn't connect to the truck and I'm locked out. There's been a few times I get in and the truck says it doesn't recognize a key and prompts me to use my key card...

Let’s see, they cancelled the first appointment and didn’t contact me. They sent a mobile tech 3 times. First time with no parts. Second time he canceled last minute due to weather third time swapped out the lights near the mirror. Finally dropped it off at a SC. Their “diagnosis” went from no problem found, to known issue with no fix available. I asked if every Rivian has this problem and of course the answer is no so I told them that logically there is a fix, replace the part that controls the lights. They said their vendor won’t warranty intermittent issues. I don’t give a flip what deal Rivian has with their vendor, that’s a Rivian problem. If your ABS module intermittently locked up I bet it would be replaced under warranty. Then they told me it would be fixed with the next update. So I acquiesced and drove it home. Wanna guess if the next update fixed it? lol smh

I can accept we’re beta testers and some things take time. But the incompetence, lack of communication, and at this point it seems straight up lies is getting old. While it was there they changed out the front hubs and driveshafts. Something I’ve lived with since day one and could have overlooked forever. So how much have they spent avoiding the actual fix? 3 trips to my house which is nowhere near a SC, a weeks rental, and a set of hubs and driveshafts. Oh. And a light.

Sadly service is their biggest problem. They have to get this solved before the R2 comes out or they are in for a world of hurt. I doubt a software fix is going fix your issue. "Known issue" but can't be fixed is about the lamest thing I've heard.....

I haven’t owned a lot of new vehicles and I’ve never threatened lemon law and it seems ridiculous for an interior light but I may have to go that route to get their attention. Oh and next time I take it in I’ll just keep their loaner until they throw some parts at it. I’ll go straight up Kevin on them.

Lemon law requires a much higher level of failure than this. Threatening lemon law won't get you anywhere with them and every service manager has heard that 100 times from irate customers. It's better to just get the loaner and keep it until they fix your truck. With Rivian, you get more attention if you are nice and just tell them how disappointed you are with the brand.

As a Gen1 owner, my understanding is that your Gen2 should be even better with phone as a key (PaaK) and I think the credit card access should be pretty much a guarantee for both generations. I suspect that something is not working right on your truck but I'd love to hear from other Gen 2 owners.

For context, we've had our Rivian for almost 2 years and the only time I've used the card to access it's because I didn't have my phone with me and I didn't want to walk into our house to get it. So PaaK may have been slow at times in the past during different software releases, but I've never had it outright fail.

If you're seeing PaaK work only 10% of the time and you're having trouble with the key (credit) card only working 25% of the time that seems like there is something wrong with the phone, card, and/or truck. Do you have the same experience with the second card and can you test with a different phone?
