2022 Rivian R1T Launch Edition
This. So this.

I remember 10 years ago when the argument started evolving; it needs to look cool, it needs to go 250 miles, I need to charge on trips, I need 300 miles, I need 6+seats, I need 350 miles, I need this manufacturer, I need 400 miles, I need American. The excuses just keep going.

Just consider this, if it's not a corner case and it's not money, then you are afraid. It might be the unknown, it might be appearance to others, but don't ruin it for the rest of us because of that.

Mark my words, the companies that are still going full-bore on electric are going to have an insurmountable lead when the winds shift the other way.
I think that's part of why Rivian has had more success with ev trucks. They went for the mid size/Tacoma market that isn't as hung up on "truck" stereotypes. Ford went after typical truck guys and unfortunately they're the biggest EV haters out there

This is one of the main reasons my wife and I got our R1T. That, and any other EV truck at the time wouldn't fit in our garage.... but we also didn't need the giant trucks the legacy manufacturers are making.

I actually got turned on to the idea of an EV truck by the Scout Terra announcement. My R1T fits in my garage by about 6-8" and if the Scout is a foot longer it might be out of the question. My old Ram didn't fit either...

I just hope with all this autonomy hype they don't leave the adventure vehicle idea behind to chase Tesla buyers.

I always thought the lightning would be good for plumbing and HVAC companies that service less than 100 miles/day. No oil changes, don’t have to give out gas cards, etc..but I was wrong so who knows what market exists for full-size EV trucks.
Many contractors in my area have switched to Lightnings. Gas is more expensive in BC, so the TCO weighs that direction I guess.

Why I went for the R1T - I'm 6'3" and I'd like to be able to reach over the fender and get stuff out of the bed when I need to. So... over these... stock "lifted" trucks that look like nothing more than giant, rolling cinder blocks coming down the road.

While numbers are not easy to find, a post on this forum mentioned that R1T sales are much lower than that of CT and Lightning..R1T may be on life support. I hope not and I love it.

Interesting, I see significantly more R1T in my area than R1S. 3 of them at my kids after school program even. But we live in a very heavily EV area

If these EV extenders were so possible, wouldn’t Ram have there’s out already and dominating the market? The towing capability is likely to be very disappointing.

The math behind them is really simple, all it needs is a generator that can produce a continuous 1kw output to keep up with battery drain. The towing capability will be no different than a current BEV since the drivetrain is identical in nature. Tow capacity might suffer (Scout) but at some point that’s just a balance of payload capacity not physical ability to pull the load. For example, adding 300+ pounds of engine/fuel reduces the towing capacity by 2500lbs when using a typical 13% tongue weight ratio. It’s no different than a R1T being rated for 11,000lbs towing but that’s only if you have a driver and no baggage at all. Add in a four person family and some stuff and your max tow capacity is now only 7500lbs.

Scout has a better chance of making it work correctly. The problem with legacy auto makers is that they are struggling financially. That’s the main reason the lightning got cancelled. They are good at making ICE vehicle. But struggling on EV.

I am curious why you think Ford is struggling financially.

$19.5 billion in EV related loss.
is not sustainable, $8.5 billion is related to cancelling planned EV models. Around $6 billion is tied to the dissolution of a battery joint venture with South Korea’s SK On, and $5 billion on what Ford called “program-related expenses.”

Only can tow 5k, very limiting. That is my main point from what we have seen so far. I will take 3 to 4 extra stops over a towing trip 2 or 3 times a year vs the hastle of having to deal with engine maintenance 100% of the year. Now if you tow weekly and they get an engine that can make the amount of kw and keep GVW down enough needed for this type of vehicle to get a 10k+ towing capability that likely would work best. I'm from MO so they have to Show Me.

I've seen a few of them running around in my area, but I'm pretty close to the Chrysler Tech center. I too am confused why they aren't on sale yet though.
