Would you pay $495 for your frunk? Mach-E buyers will have to

The way most US vehicles are made, dealers orders the inventory and I cannot imagine any dealer ordering Mach-E without a frunk. Ford should have just increase the base price by the same amount.

What's next? Back seats? Subscription for frunk and back seats? Selling firmware updates?

If this sticks (which I think Ford will walk it back as an option and simply increase the price of the base vehicle), an opportunity for SEMA aftermarket makers to create carbon fiber frunk kit or some other interesting ways to use the space.

I expect shipping on a big bulky tub, combined with the likelihood that the Mach-E only has at most 2 more model years, means this won't happen.
Didn't realize that it was about to be retired. Junkyards/used-parts might be a sources, as well, but if the recent models have a smaller frunk, due to the heat pump, there would be a limited supply of those. If I was in the market for an Mach-E, I would be looking for an alternate source.

Ford hasn't said anything, but speculation is that after the new platform EV pickup truck comes out, the next vehicle will be a similar to Mach-E size and the Mach-E at that point will by 7 years old.

I would have bought my R1T without back seats, if it had been available that way (and if the discount had been substantial). In three years, I've probably had someone in the back seats three times. But I keep the backseat area loaded with tools/supplies almost all of the time.

They are in the business of making money after all. Every auto maker does this. Want the nice shiny metallic paint, $500-2500 extra. Black wheels, fork over another $2000. It’s not new, it’s not ridiculous, it’s business as usual for the last several decades I’ve been buying vehicles.
Yes, they are absolutely in business of making money. And I agree, if you want metallic paint (I hate metallic paint, btw), or black wheels, etc. then you need to pay for those options. The frunk though, that's a little different - you're not getting anything extra, you're merely asking to use what is already (and has always been) there.

As a Mach-e owner who bought the car at the end of our 3 year lease, it's a very well built and fun to drive vehicle. But...there was so much de-contenting that went on between when we ordered the car and finally took delivery that I'd have a hard time buying another. Jim Farley, "car guy", is not much of a "customer guy."

Can I get a reduced price by deleting other random equipment out of the car too? I really only need the one seat. And I can use a piece of cardboard instead of the carpet. Headliner seems like an expensive extra too.

My rule is I'll pay for something where there is a cost to the manufacture to have it.

Subscriptions - Must require ongoing cost

Hardware - I have to be paying for something.

I generally refrain from pre-ordering and from paying for SW unlocks.

The first Jeep Wrangler I owned didn't have a back seat at all. I'm pretty sure it didn't even have a passenger side mirror.

It was made sometime around the late 80's.

I'm pretty sure Porsche has perfected the art of having the base car have absolutely the bare minimum.

Frunk is used on every shopping trip. Invaluable, but I would not pay extra for it :)

Depends on the owner I suppose. I use the Rivian and Cybertruck frunks all the time for groceries, take-out food, etc. Both are powered and quicker to access from coming in/out of the drivers seat than going around the back to the trunk.
Agreed. My Model S and Model X just held things like snow chains, charger adapters, etc. But 6 weeks in and I use the R1S' frunk aaaaaaaall the time. Take out? No smelly cabin, yes please. Shopping at the mall? Not visible and more secure, yes please. Same with my wife's purse or my laptop bag. Groceries? No rolling around and easy to get to on the way in the house, yes please. Love it. And it's all because it's got a button to open it.

Remember when BMW floated the idea of heated seats being a subscription service? $10 a month be warm in the winter. It didn't go over well and they canned the idea.

Like the parking assist button that now just does nothing? Hey... they could make that open the frunk. ;-)
