The issue (as many Mach E users on this thread have pointed out) is that Ford noticed nobody uses the frunk.

So, instead of going “why is that and can we fix it?” they decided it’s optional.

But if it had an exterior release or a release on the key fob, it might get more use.

I use my R1S frunk the exact same way I use my Mach-E frunk. To store rarely used things (mobile EVSE, car vacuum) and for extra storage when I road trip with the family. I don’t use it day to day.

I suspect you would find the same thing for vast majority of EV owners. It’s just much more convenient to load and access things in the trunk vs frunk and it’s pretty rare that you have to fully max out storage options.

Maybe it's because I have an R1T, but the frunk gets at minimum, weekly use as part of our grocery runs.

We used to put groceries in the back seat in our Model Y (and Model 3 before that).

im not saying all.. im just saying the vast majority. Probably about half the homes in my neighborhood have at least one EV in the driveway. I rarely see anyone accessing their frunk.

Powered or not, I personally don’t find it at all convenient for groceries. Usually there is a car parked in front of me so loading is easier on the back. Takeout just goes in the passenger seat or space at the center console floor. And things like kids stroller / wagon (my most commonly loaded item) don’t fit in the frunk for my 2025 R1S.

They are in the business of making money after all. Every auto maker does this. Want the nice shiny metallic paint, $500-2500 extra. Black wheels, fork over another $2000. It’s not new, it’s not ridiculous, it’s business as usual for the last several decades I’ve been buying vehicles.

My drink is perfect for groceries from Costco...deep enough to hold them without crushing the eggs and when I pull into the carport, the frunk is the closest part to the entryway to the house. The Frunk also holds my portable charger, and (depending on the trip when needed) recovery boards and 30amp extension cord and associated adapters.

I think those who never had a Frunk would not pay for it, but after having one, I'd definitely do so.

Reading through all of this.....this is just like any other option.

"Would you pay $2500 for 'technology package'"?
"Would you pay $1500 for fancier wheels?"
"Would you pay $250 for heated seats?"
"Would you pay $1500 for leather?"

Be happy you're not shopping (or have already) for Porsches. You can double the price of the vehicle in options alone, many of which are, "Why is this not free/included? Only the color is changing."

Many things don't cost extra for the manufacturer to produce, but if they can make extra money, why not? They're in the business to make money.

I own both a Mach-E and a Lightning.

Lightning has an exterior frunk button. Mach-E does not.
Lightning standard fob has a frunk button. Mach-E does not (although you can buy a Lightning fob and program it just fine).
Lightning frunk is huge, bigger than the R1S, and holds a lot. Mach-E frunk is small, and starting with 2025 when they added a heat pump is even smaller.
Lightning fills a 20' standard garage, so you have to open the frunk before pulling in all the way (or outside). Mach-E is easy to open in a garage.

I have my Mach-E frunk mostly full with emergency stuff, blanket, fire extinguisher, towel, etc. My Lightning frunk is basically empty, because that stuff is under my backseat in its storage.

On a trip with the Lightning, we packup the bed with our stuff (covered by a Diamondback HD cover with security locks). We put our overnight bag for the hotel in the frunk, so we're not revealing all our stuff to everyone each night as we check-in to the hotels along the route.

I agree that more Lightning buyers would use the frunk than Mach-E buyers, but it's not unused. I think once Ford downsized it in 2025, then they decided to play with pricing and make it an option to see how many would order it that way.

Fleet buyers do - and probably get a discount from that. As someone who has owned several Econolines that had been fleet vehicles - they had no options (unless A/C was an option). AM only radios. No cruise control. No power windows or power locks.

New Mach-E buyers will now need to pay $495 more to be able to have their frunk. Begs the question, would you be willing to pay for your frunk?

If it is only the frunk insert/liner, this will be a product that aftermarket companies will probably jump on. $200 or $250 for the insert, versus $495 from Ford. And, of course, this will likely be an incentive that Ford will throw in when trying to move cars at the end of a quarter.

I expect shipping on a big bulky tub, combined with the likelihood that the Mach-E only has at most 2 more model years, means this won't happen.
