Good day, not sure where to post this so I went with the most current news section. Long time lurker, Oct 2019 Reservation holder and DSP investor. I’ve been leery to join the forum due to the rabbit hole you can go down, (AudiWorld) enough said. I wanted to pass along a conversation I had with CS a few days ago due to the statement that she made regarding the tonneau covers. I noted that a number of LE reservation holders would prefer the manual cover to the motorized option, (if you live anywhere with pine needles you know why) and would be happy to have that as an option. She stated that they were not aware if this and encouraged me to have people let them know this is something that people wanted. She noted that’s what got the Off-Road Upgrade moved to an add on. I really like the config of the LE however I’m considering changing my order to the Explore Package due to the motorized tonneau.

PS, she also said she was not aware of any issues they were having with said motorized tonneau, I found that strange with all the reviews and such mentioning it as an issue.

cheers

The bigger concern for me is the disparity between the acceleration and braking abilities for the average consumer. For something that can hit 60mph in ~3 seconds, I want braking distances under 110ft (minimum) for that same speed (preferably 105' or under). The braking distances are good for a 7,000-lb vehicle, but plenty of people are likely to over drive those brakes in my opinion.

I've had my 4 second 0-60 EV for less than three weeks and last night got a ticket for impeding traffic. I don't think your concern is justified.
Don’t jinx yourself. I have substantial direct experience with high speed, law enforcement, and stupid driving behavior. I’ve seen a lot. I think the middle aged demographic is probably the highest risk. You get some money, blow it all on a fast electric truck, all of a sudden you’re a YouTuber drag racing teenagers…

I believe the pre-production trucks don't have the same hardware for the motorized tonneau cover, and they've been sending them out intentionally disabled because they have a tendency to not work well. It's supposedly already been fixed in the production trucks, but those are all going to customers.

Easy: It comes down to motors. Four of 'em, to be exact. The Rivian R1T has four permanent-magnet motors, each one mounted inboard at a wheel, which combine to produce 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque. The front motors are slightly less powerful than the rear, producing 415 hp and 413 lb-ft versus 420 hp and 495 lb-ft. The big 135-kW battery pack is capable of charging at speeds up to 190 kW (though we're told the system will eventually be able to handle 300-kW peak speeds), giving the R1T 314 miles of range and 74/66/70 mpg-e city/highway/combined EPA ratings.

@SeaGeo I guess they do have parallel charging and they just don't want to advertise it yet.
New tactic. Annoy MT to confirm their article. ?

He seems pretty confident they didn't miscommunicate.
Even if correct, it still doesn't clarify if this will be possible on an EA 350 kW charger (it shouldn't be based on my knowledge of current EA hardware) or if it will be exclusive to future RAN chargers.

If it's true, I'd assume they're going about it with the 800v equivalent "switch" and that it'd work on RAN. I'd be surprised if they're shoving a ton of current down rather than upping the volts.

Sure, but answers > assumptions.

MT says you don't give up much.
Sorry, but they are the guys that didn't air down to go out on the beach. And they got stuck. There clearly were people during the Utah/Colorado section that now how to drive that particular kind of off-road. But I'd take their general assessment of "don't give up much" as being defined by each users definition of "light off-road duty".

Particularly off-road, it is the exceptions that get you. The taller ATs are exactly what allows you to air down and still have some air left before your (very expensive) rim is "done in" by a 7000 vehicle hitting the rock.

Having said that, 99% of R1T owners will never take their vehicle on anything worse than a county maintained gravel/dirt road and will therefore be absolutely fine if they keep their speed down.

funny how they call the R1T with 21s with AS tires "even quicker... in a staggering 3.1 seconds", when the R1T with 20s and AT tires did it in 3.2 seconds. uuuhhh.... anyone heard of margin of error at MT?

Guess the only thing we don't know is how well the 21's will fare in light off-road duty.
I think maybe we do for 'light' offroad - you can see that in the edmonds review.?.

Also, for sand, I was told that the trip on the beach to east hampton ny (soft sand) was on the 21s (by customer service).

By the way, this is the same answer I got from a cs rep a couple weeks ago. I asked if the LE vehicles will have a 400 or 800V system and he said he didn't know, so I asked if the LE vehicles will be able to charge to 300KW with a hardware update or with ota update, and he said the vehicles will have the hardware ready to charge at 300kw, but off the gate it'll only be ~200kw software restricted.

A worthy data point! Though the pessimist in me is saying they're just not interpreting their own website correctly (and parroting what's on the RAN page rather than the vehicle pages). FWIW, when I asked CS about charging voltages and rates, they barely understood what I was talking about (I had to re-ask the question a few times...), but assured me they're "making sure that charging has been engineered to work great in all situations" (paraphrasing some PR speak). If it was just a matter of charging rates and battery degradation, I don't see why they wouldn't have 800V charging out-the-gate for better compatibility with networks, but keep the 200kW restriction until they feel confident the battery can handle it.
