And this is why we can’t rely on self driving (eg FSD) features yet

Omar (ie WholeMarsBlog on X) recently driving his Model S, showing off how great FSD is, and then blows through a stop sign at 20+mph. There’s even a pedestrian at the corner—good thing he didn’t cross the street!

Look, I’m all for driver assistance features, but the burden of reliability should be extremely extremely high.

edit: I have FSD on my MYP, but I won’t use it on local streets. Encounters like this are still way too common

That whole drive was filled with some scary things and admission that sometimes they have to encourage it to go when conditions are too busy.

That video must be part of a smear campaign. Why would Space Karen name something “full self driving” if it can’t fully do all the driving for me? You’re just a hater…

I don't care that it has the Beta label on it...shouldn't be allowed on the road. So, so many examples of FSD Beta doing stupid and dangerous shit and the "drivers" doing nothing about it. It's basically like a drunk teenager just learning to drive.

My only experience with FSD was a test drive in friend's YP just before I preordered Rivian. A block after he put it in FSD the arterial took a hard right and FSD bugged out and sent me in the opposing lane and I would have hit the guardrail if I didn't already have my hands on the wheel. Was super scary and we were very lucky there wan't any opposing traffic. Never again. Of course, he said he's never seen that before in typical tesla fan minimizing. And...the thing drove like a gokart with no suspension

To be fair, I had a similar incident with Rivian Highway Assist. I was on I-70 westbound where it splits into I-270 and in the right-most lane where two lanes went onto I-270. No warnings of any kind on the display and the truck seemed happy with good lane markings, etc. It became very clear it wasn't going to take the turn and was going to cross the lane line between the two lanes that were turning and had I not taken over it would've gone off the road between the split. For two highways that were mapped I was pretty surprised when it happened, but again, I didn't let it go far before I corrected it. I even had nav set and it was telling me to take the I-270 exit...so just weird.

The difference here is Rivian is marketed as a driver assist, it is not being called Full Self Driving.

the burden of reliability is high and for good reason as you pointed it. part of the problem is that Musk and Tesla continue to mislabel their systems. "autopilot" and "FSD" (full self driving) are not those at all.

Tesla autopilot is level 2 and FSD is still considered level 2 though their "musk marketing" and naming makes it seem like its closer to level 5.

After blowing the stop sign at 20mph, approximately 20 seconds later in the video when they are passing by the Amazon delivery van the FSD almost plowed them into a parked car.. the driver took over and pulled them out of it.

Wonderful system o_O

Here's anther one where FSD blows a stop sign, but this time at 35mph!

I don't trust these assist features to do anything more than keep me in my lane on the freeway.
Even with that they pretty much keep you lane centered which means you hit every pot hole almost dead on perfect for maximum damage.

If I understand your comment correctly, you expected the truck to take the right exit from existing road, with Nav enabled.

Rivian’s D+ doesn’t take turns. It only maintains a lane and speed. It’s a pretty basic L2 driver assist.

If you have Nav set to a destination which requires you to make a deliberate turn off your existing road, it will not do so. Also, I do not believe it will warn you about the situation, so you’ll just blow past the exit and need to double back.
