Which R2 wheel size is everyone getting?

From searching it seems that Rivian just supports minor OD differences on R1. But its not unreasonable that they could support more significant tire size differences if they chose to. Ford Bronco for example supports 30", 32", 33", 35" and 37". The 35" requires minor mods and the 37" is only on the Raptor, so neither is a directly relevant comparison, but the 30", 32" and 33" all seem to be options on the standard chassis. I was presuming Rivian supported similar flexibility, but it appears not.

I value range over other factors so I’ll order the 21s. I also trust that Michelin will have a replacement by the time I’ll need them. That’s what happened with my R1S

Just remember the R1S came out about 2-3 years after the R1T. I would expect it to take over 2 years before any other options appear on the market. The range difference will be negligible.

Don't you find it odd that all the review cars and now the demo cars are coming on 20's. Sounds like Rivian knows the ride quality will be significantly different to the point people may not buy with the 21's.

Technically didn’t the R1s some out only 1 year after the R1t?.. that said, for a vehicle like the R1S, they only delivery 20K? In 2023 (nearly none in 2022, 650?), ~ 50K in 2024, and 42K in 2025.. I have the feeling that the R2 should try and get to at least 75k- 100K in 2027. Their production CAN reach 100K at the current plant and another 200K at the GA plant when it comes online (and even that can be increased).

So For an OEM tire manufacturer to engineer a tire just for the 30-40K new cars per year for the early R1S years, I could see them holding back, but now with the apparent large coming jump in volume with R2 an OEM should be doing that engineering today and I doubt it would be another 2-3-4 years before we see at least a SECOND 21” in that spec.

Imagine hoping a tire comes in 1-2 years then you get a flat on a trip and can't get a replacement...

I’m not sure about demos, haven’t seen any other than some limited press. But I think putting the 20’s with AT on the ones that a few have industry reporters and influencers were able to drive a few months ago, most of what I saw included a lot of off pavement driving, dirt track and terrain and I would imagine just kiting all the cars with the AT format would be better for that?

There are optional sizes to consider. If you wanted to get into the Michelin Defender LTX M/S2, you could go with 275/50-21. That tire size is only slightly taller and wider than the 255/55-21

The OD for that tire is 31.8", i.e. 0.2" smaller in diameter than that stated for the OEM 255/55 R21. So assuming the OEM tire is exactly 32" then the ride height is lower by 0.1", i.e. negligible impact to speedo, odometer and range. Your AI search done you wrong on the ride height ;-) The unknown is if the extra width causes any rubbing at the steering extremes, but it seems like it could be a good alternative prospect worth investigating further.

That being said, an R1S owner friend (he also had an R1T) told me to not get the 21 inch wheels in a discussion. I was always leaning towards the 20’s anyway for tires choices as we switch from summer to snow to summer every year. So lack of tire choices is not an option.

I agree, $1000 upfront to save money through the life of the vehicle.

I wish they were not AT tires on the 20’s, but will have to live with it.

Same here - on the other models the 20 inch wheel with Standard tires is the lesser expensive option - are we paying more just for the Tire - i would much prefer getting the 20 inch rims with a standard tire - so now not only do i have to pay for the smaller tire - but also a replacement set of 20 standard tires to eliminate the noise and reduced mileage of the ATs

Exactly, I want A/S tires for the summer and absolutely have to have snow tires for winter. The tires coming out he 20” wheels have little to no value to me. I would love to sell them the day I take delivery of the car.
