You forgot the $4,000 from Premium to Performance.

So Premium 20” AS to Performance 20” AS is $6,500 upcharge for swanky wheels and less restrictive software.
And faster performance, semi adaptive suspension and additional color choice.

That faster performance is due solely to less restrictive software. Totally uninformed re: merits of semi active suspension.

But my real point is that this seems to be a bit of a packaging miscue, the performance trim only offers somewhat more extreme tire wheel combo or the AT tire. Kind of missing the max range option for “normie“ (20”) drivers.

$1000 for the 20" tires and $1500 to swap out for 4 all seasons. That's a lot of money for something the Premium comes with standard.
If you do it right away you could probably sell the almost new tires for, say $800. Might ease the pain a bit, and you can get tires you like.

From Atomic Wheels I'm getting the same custom 22 inch wheels I have on my R1S Quad with the R2 bolt pattern.

I'm enjoying the efficiency from my Nokian one HT (2.64) All season tires and expect better of the same from the R2 since they're 2,000lbs lighter when compared to R1S Quad.

FYI -Atomic Wheels prices are increasing in 2027...you can pre-order and save ahead of R2 delivery.

Stay adventurous forever!!!
What is that R2 pattern model number or did you custom build them from Atomic?

Regarding tire wear with the OEM Pirellis, remember R2 weighs around 2k lbs less than R1 which will have a significant impact on wear. Also, this is going to be a high volume vehicle so tire manufacturers will eventually have more options for the 21”.
100% agree

20”

I’m not going to risk being out of use for a vehicle multiple days awaiting a tire shop to get an oddball size in stock. Even worse if im on an out of town trip. Those believing these 21” tires will suddenly become commonplace because R2 exists are deluding themselves.

The issue with 21" rims isn't the lack of tire options, its the lack of tire options with a 32" OD. The BMW iX3 50 has 255/40 R21 options with a 29" OD, Volvo EX60 has a 255/45 R21 tire option with a 30" OD. There are also Winter, Summer and AS 255/50 tire options available with a 31" OD. Playng around on TireSize.com (31" linked) shows a number of 29", 30" and 31" options for example.

So if R2 supports the option to program in different wheel OD sizes, then there are options. What they would look like on the R2, with more space between the wheel arch and the tire, and how they would ride with the smaller sidewall are unknown. Although both iX3 50 and EX60 are riding with the same smaller sidewall.

All that said, I'll go with the 20" and take the range hit since I plan to do light off roading.

Rivian will not allow this programing. They will only support factory size OD. We know this because this is how it is on R1...

Interesting. So what does the programming actually do in R1 if OD isn't allowed to change? I thought all the factory wheel options for R1 were 34" OD?

I believe it just triggers the car to recalibrate its speedometer.

Apparently it also updates the graphics on the menus to show the car with the correct wheel. Also might tune the suspension for different profile tires.

Not only that it changes the mileage calculation for range and odometer. Not an insignificant amount of programing.

So this is what I'm not understanding. If the OD stays the same then the odometer wouldn't need to be recalibrated. The same would be true for range based just on the OD. The range might change based on tire tread pattern and compound for a tire with the same OD, but is the R1 given that data when an owner inputs a change? This is why I presumed that the R1 (and potentially R2 in the future) would allow a different OD to be programmed in. 🤷‍♂️

The OD will be a bit different between worn and new tires.
