I have a problem with my RIT tailgate opening automatically (on its own whim) whenever i start or stop my RIT, which can be a problem if i am parked close to another car. Any ideas as to fixing?

Never heard of such a thing. Sounds like you might have a bad latch or something - definitely get it serviced.

getting it serviced is easier said than done in Cayman - we do not have any service technicians on the island. any ideas for a self fix?

This is most likely one of several hardware problems. Of course it could also be you accidentally activating it with the app widget? Does that even work in the Caymans?

Maybe it's not closing all the way, or something is jammed in the mechanism? Does the app or center console show it open?

I have no solution, but the above comment reminded me of this meme. 😉 Good luck, let us know how it goes!

The app in the center console shows it closed when closed and open when it decides to open itself, and occasionally it decides to open the tailgate and retract the bed canopy cover at the same time :) - and no, the app widget doesn't work here ....... duck tape could be a solution, but not very elegant.

I guess that is worth a try, assuming you could get a software fix pushed to your location. Have you already done a soft reset, and if that did not work, a hard reset?

I wasn't joking and it's the most obvious answer. Have you looked at the latch mechanisms? all plastic. Not exactly a material that is low-friction and inert to ambient temps. All tailgate malfunctions I've experienced coincide with climate. Very chilly days and very hot days. The mechanisms need to be lubricated, adjusted or replaced. In my case, lubrication is all mine needed. But I think that's just a band-aid fix. This is not a software issue. The resets don't change the fundamental flaw in choice of materials used in these parts; of plastic-on-plastic friction.

And this isn't the only report of tailgate malfunction. There are many others. Why are people so allergic to forum search?

Does Rivian respond to service tickets submitted from the Cayman Islands? Can they even query the vehicle diagnostics from a vehicle in the Cayman Islands? If the widgets don’t work there, I would not be surprised if the only option is to ship the vehicle to the US for diagnosis and repair.

Ok that I missed. Other than keeping the latches clean and well-lubricated, they're SOL. But there is a flaw in choice of materials for the latches. And it's not a Rivian exclusive. Other vehicles with plastic latches have similar problems. Result of industry wide trend to lower costs by using plastics instead of metals.

There have been several threads with pictures showing how to access/adjust the latch and the torsion bar that softens the drop. Dropping when you start or stop sounds like it might be correlated with the automatic lock/unlock. It could simply be a loose electrical connector and/or a mechanical problem, but I highly doubt it can be fixed in software.

this isn't the only report of tailgate malfunction
Although there have been some latch-related problems reported by others, I have never heard about this particular problem. It's usually failure to drop, or failure to latch on one side, or a torsion bar that popped out and needs to be re-attached - never an automatic operation on start/stop.

The fact that the tonneau cover and the tailgate both operate unexpectedly at the same time points to the button on the back left that controls them both.
