When a button is Black it's on? When a button is White it's off?
When a button is Black it's off? When a button is gray it's on?
Wait, when it's dark gray it's not light gray it's off or on?
Remember when it's dark out black is off but when it's light out black is on.
Is Recirc enabled or disabled when activated black or when it's white?
WTF?

Yes, I noticed this the first week I had my Rivian. It’s annoying but I got used to it.

Is the white button recirc, or fresh air? I just leave it alone and hope for the best, but seems the opposite of every other vehicle and can never tell if that button is on or off anyway.

I've learned to deal with my monochrome condition also known as prevaricate gray.

OK—we need to get this fixed. Rivian should have a Human Interface Guideline—HIG ( eg, https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/) so that button colors are consistent. The guidelines would be used by all the different developers so they know what the Rivian Look and Feel™ looks like and can make their code conform to the HIG. Rivians are software defined vehicles, and the user interface must be polished. Pay attention to the details. We can help point out these problems.

Is it the color of the "background" next to it? Then it's off. Is it "closer to the opposite shade"? Then it's on.

The photos above are in Light Mode and Dark Mode

In Dark Mode, the Front, Middle, and Back background for that Button Group shouldn’t be black, but closer in color to the background outside of the Button Group

My solution:
Add a user enabled "buttons for dummies" mode.
Have a headlight shaped indicator area beside the button text that when enabled is compass yellow. When not enabled they are welcome to use any shade of gray they'd like.

I'd enable this instantly and never look back.

Is the button filled or not? Color doesn’t matter. If it’s filled, it’s activated.

But filled with what? There are a bunch of UI sliders that turn yellow when activated in the settings. Those don't seem to change from memory. It's like a completely different team did this and never bothered talk to other people developing the UI. Not too mention the issue that it could be 30 degrees in the cabin, you set the heat to 60 and the AIR conditioning comes on to cool your feet instead of the heater. Maybe the glass needs to be off? It's basically saying, push whatever buttons you want because it's not going to matter, haha.
I just roll the window down for fresh air and up for recirc because that button seems to provide the desired effect.

Could have been done better, but not really an issue for me. I’ve been in vehicles with terrible UIs, and Rivian’s is actually fairly intuitive.

If the button is filled with a color different than the background that it is ON (contrast).
If a button is empty (so same as background) then it is OFF (no contrast).

For me never had any confusion about it from Day1.
Either it looks different from its background/surrounding (ON) or it looks the same.
Never had to think about it twice was very intuitive from first glance.

To be honest if I do not read your post I would have never thought about it :)
But I see your point if you are a type who focuses on colors.

Use the power/"front/middle/back" buttons as your guide :).

Shades of Grey ! snark.. I myself have found the ambiguity in the UI. I like the yellow on, not yellow off. That would be consistent. Same goes for the phone App.
Or, the icon and to the right or left the word on or off. or the value such as 1. 2, 3 high or low. Etc.
