My R2 Range Estimates

TLDR: 218 to 311 mi depending on configuration.

Standard Battery, Dual Motor:
218 mi

Standard Bat, Single Motor:
245 mi

Large Bat, Dual Motor:
276 mi

Large Bat, Single Motor:
311 mi
I assume those estimates are with the aero rims and high efficiency tires. Need to subtract 5-10% range for AT tires.

Well, since these "estimates" (aka wild-ass guesses) contradict what Rivian has publicly said about range, I'll stick with the Rivian numbers. I question the motivation of anyone who publicly posts derogatory speculation like this, as well as those who just accept these numbers as fact and start predicting Rivian's demise based on them.

If Rivian cannot deliver 300 miles for $45k what have they been doing for the last 2 years?
I can't imagine they will be less than 300 miles on the $45K version. It would be a non-starter in 2026/2027 for sure.

You can be owned by a company, be considered an employee of that company, and still not know what the other parts are doing or be able to information. Happens all the time, in multiple industries. Hell, it happens in places that are the exact same company too!
tis true

everyone does not, and can not, know everything necessarily

However, with R2 being a “bet the company” launch I’d expect comms channels to be tighter than normal….Illinois.

Sorry, had to take the layup Dad joke.

Enjoy embargo release day, we’ll all find out soon enough

and maybe that configurator will finally go live if some tells that team to launch it ;-)

I didn’t realize I was shaking a hornets nest. I am simply trying to guess the range of the different varieties w based on publicly available information and to see if any of you have publicly available info that supports my estimates or something else.

My estimate is far from a wild ass guess as I was accused of making @VSG. If you look at the info I shared to make my estimates I think these are reasonable estimates, even if they aren’t as high as I would like to see for R2.

I don’t see anywhere online where Rivian states that all variants will have 300 or more miles of range. What I found said that that is their target. This seems to indicate that 300 miles or more will be achieved on some versions. If you look at past marketing from Tesla that likely means on certain longest range variants ie: RWD Models with LR batteries.

“Utilizes an all-new 4695 cell that offers significant improvements in energy density and output, estimated to deliver over 300 miles of range on a single charge for both R2 and R3.”

This info from Rivian also seems to indicate that R2 won’t have blazing charging speeds:
“DC fast charging is compatible with both NACS (native) and CCS (with adapter), charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes”

https://stories.rivian.com/meet-r2-and-r3

I look forward to seeing how close my estimates are to reality. Feel free to make your own estimates and post below with your methodology if you like.

I agree that one model will be below 300 and one above. However 218 miles is absurd. Now to be fair you are not quoting EPA which is the only apples to apples way to compare range and are pretty close to real world efficiency for most people.

Yeah, any other company, sure. Where Rivian is positioning themselves? I'd eat my words, but no chance in hell.

They have not confirmed, but RJ has strongly hinted that most (if not all) would get at least 300 miles of range. Tesla has also claimed recently that they are not going to release vehicles under 300 miles of range (but Tesla being Tesla, released a model Y shortly after at 294 miles). It is 2026. Anything below 300 seems "unacceptable". They are not going to release such a highly anticipated vehicle with 216 miles of range. It would flop immediately. This is not the Jeep Recon. This Rivian saying "hold my beer" to Tesla and positioning themselves as the new segment benchmark.

Based on how the range has played out for the R1 line, it does not seem like the range suffers more with more motors. I'd assume a range of 300ish miles for the smaller pack with AWD and probably seeing closer to 350 miles for the RWD large pack and everything else falling somewhere in between. My guess is complete made up as well, but looking over at the Model Y, it wouldn't surprise if I'm at least in the ballpark.

75*4=300..so maybe base models will get 300 miles
I hope no one actual thinks they are getting anywhere near 4.93m/kwh in a R2.

A minute later in that video when he is showing screens and menus, the efficiency said 3.1m/kwh. A lot more realistic.

You will need 3.67 mi/kWh to get 275 miles on the EPA test with a 5000lb R2 with decent aero. If you're getting 3.2 mi/kWh, you get 240 miles.

They were not driving the small battery. Those R2's were large pack(est 95kwh).
