...last edited on Dec 14. That's well within the time that Musk was nosing around in Washington. ...
So no different that any other companies lobbying and trying to influence. Just about every major companies in every industry do so.

I am very familiar with federal procurement process and anything this large has to be competed and not sole sourced. The fact that its in the budge line means that it had to have been in the process for well over a year.

Someone can dig into FOIA to access more info, if its not classified by the governent.

I am also very familiar with the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and the DoD version (DFAR). I have seen larger $$$ requirements go sole source, but for very valid reason that have been vetted at multiple levels.

From my understanding of CT capabilities vice competitors, I can not see how they could have directed the award to Tesla. I remind and am reminded of the Washington Post test frequently (how would it look if it was on the front page of the Washington Post). This wouldn't pass that test based purely on appearance issues. Appearance issues can be just as bad as reality.

Agree. I have had over 30yrs of DOD/NASA/DOE procurement experience as a program manger on multiple programs and pursuits, and the only way I can see this happening is through a huge IDIQ mechanism where CT was provided through a IDIQ contract holder.

Yes, and that's why I mentioned that this was probably not the full story.

All possibilties considered (including that perhaps it did not originally say Tesla and a disgruntled staffer added "Tesla" out of spite?), it's impossible to know the true story, and we will never know the true story.

It's NOT the full story. If you read what the article says now (which is 180 degrees OFF of what they originally posted as an "Elon shaming" article that clearly intended to show him as a hypocrite)...it says that Tesla was the ONLY bidder. There is NO WAY that they would have written those specs to exclude the electric Hummer or any of the Legacy-Vehicles-Turned-EV put out by the "traditional" U.S. manufacturers...

This is the ORIGINAL headline and photo that they have TOTALLY REVERSED

When you have the keys to the house, or in this case the passwords to the systems.....

"After reports circulated Wednesday night of the State Department's intent to purchase Tesla vehicles, the document was edited, at 9:12 p.m., and now says the federal contract is for $400 million worth of "armored electric vehicles," but the word "Tesla" was removed."

Don't be nitpicky, they just want to save America.

If you click the ORIGINAL NPR link, it takes you to a DIFFERENT headline on a story that is completely different from what they first posted.
