I am a band teacher and musician who owns a 2015 Prius II. For the past 9 years, I have made it work, but I am ready for a fully electric pickup. I love Rivian for many reasons, but I will never need 600 hp or the full-size bed. When will the be an R2T, or whatever it will be called??

There's no plans currently, by anyone, to make a smaller BEV pickup. Hybrid Maverick might be the closest thing for now, supposedly there's a PHEV Ranger coming to the US 'soon'.

Yeah, the current hybrid Maverick would be a good option. The hybrid Maverick gets 40+ mpg in the city. There was talk of a plug-in hybrid version of the Maverick coming in the next couple years. This would be great for so many people to have a low-cost small pickup that would primarily run on electricity. Having said that, I just saw an article that said the EV/PHEV Maverick models wouldn’t come until 2030, so I wouldn’t make any purchase plans based on that coming in the next couple years.

One limitation of the hybrid Maverick is that it is limited to a 2,000 pound towing rating. I have a glider (aircraft) trailer that is about 2,250 pounds, so that ruled the hybrid Maverick out in my vehicle search. The regular EcoBoost Maverick has a larger tow rating on it, but I had no interest in that. That isn’t an issue for many pickup buyers though.

edit: regarding your R2T inquiry, Rivian has just announced the ”R2“ as an SUV. There are no announced plans to make a truck version of the R2.

The R1T does not have a full size bed, it’s only 4.5’

I believe your sentiments are why the Standard pack exists and their used vehicle program

2025 Maverick finally added an AWD Hybrid version now with the same optional package for 4k towing capacity. Had that been out a year ago it would have been really tempting :)

Ford has claimed they have plans for a true mid-size EV pickup, but I sure wouldn’t hold my breath. IF they ever make it, it will be years away. For now the R1T is the smallest EV pickup you can find. They may make a more basic version but no announcements yet.

You might take a look at the Ford Maverick hybrid. It’s not a full EV, but it gets FAR better mpg than any mid size pick up. I think it gets up to 40mpg. By all accounts they are great small trucks.

Depending on your price point and interior preferences, an entry "Work Trim" E Silverado might work for you. It is considered a full size truck, but there are really no other options out there yet.

The Fisker Alaska would have probably been perfect for you, but sadly that's off the board now :(

"full size bed"? The R1T has one of the smallest beds currently available in a pickup. I think of current shipping pickups, only the Hyundai Santa Cruz has a smaller bed.

Rivian has said absolutely nothing about making an R2 or R3 pickup.

If you want "compact electric pickup" and aren't planning on any road trips, find an old turn-of-the-century Ford Ranger EV or Chevy S10 EV. (Yes, Ford and Chevy both made electric compact pickups from 1998-2002ish. They were super-limited production, only officially available in California, and most were leased to fleets rather than sold outright; but a few of each remain out there. And both have available conversion kits that convert them to J1772 plugs fro their original proprietary plugs.)

I’m pretty sure Ford announced their smaller EV truck is coming sometime in 2026 on a dedicated EV platform.

Details are scarce, but it’s supposedly in development. I didn’t dig into it too much, but I recall seeing some headlines around the last earnings call.
