Don't be surprised if, once the Lidar equipped version comes out, there is a surge of low mileage used non-Lidar R2s suddenly available on the used market at discount prices.
There might be a point where this happens but it could be years away when the software is ready. Most of the lidar value initially seems to be for data collection so little direct benefit to the end customer. Which is why Gen 2 has plenty of room to improve and get software updates long after lidar comes out.

I’m curious, why?
If you live in a rural, midwest area never buy an EV with under 375-400 miles of range. Obviously most of my charging is at home, but my original 2022 QM I couldn't go 220 miles round trip in the winter without charging. Lack of infrastructure in rural areas is a big deal. Essentially had to stop at 100 miles and charge back to 80 percent and hope I'm not into the wind. My Tri Max is better, but I doubt a 98 KW battery in the R2 will be as good as the 131 battery in the original R1s. I know we all view things for our use case, but given dcfc pedestrian charge curve and competition I think the small pack size is a mistake.

I reserved 2 on Day 1 and will unlikely use either of them. I'm sure there are a ton of people wanting it but depending on price, people may pass on the launch edition and wait for the base version.

If you buy early, you are going to pay more for fewer features and buggy, unrefined first editions.
Would it really be so foolish to take the plunge early? I do plan on snagging a launch edition if possible and I'm comfortable with any issues that might arise during the warranty period.

I figure it'll be ok to roll the dice since Rivian has basically the entire company riding on this vehicle and will need those Launch Editions to be as perfect as possible.

...I could also look like a horse's ass in a few years with a lemon 😬

Getting a lemon is always a possibility in any vehicle purchase, especially on launch of a new model, but Rivian seems to have a handle on things and they are purposefully doing a slow ramp up, so I would think your odds are good. And it’s also possible that the launch edition might have good resale value years later, but that usually only happens with legendary limited edition sports cars and the like.

Initially reserved an R2 in March of 2024. Hopefully, leasing the R2 will be an option at launch.

I reserved my R2 about 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone knew how many reservations there are and how long it will take to build them all. I know I’m really really late to the game but just wondering if it’ll probably be mid to late 2027 or even 2028 before I could get my R2. Or could it by rare chance be earlier in 2027.
No one knows. Details will be announced in matter of weeks on 3/12. And just a few days after concept reveal on 03.07.2024, Rivian collected over 60k reservations. By end of last year that figure was rumored to be over 200k. Safe to assume you won't see yours in all of 2026 and maybe even 2027. You are more likely to see pre-owned examples put up for sale by owners... by those looking to flip for profit or have set expectations too high. Same pattern witnessed with R1 and just about any highly anticipated new car.

@franklinb - Welcome to the Forum! Nobody can tell you - there's another thread (search is your friend) regarding the number of people who placed R2 reservations, but those would only be the folks active here. We have a reservation (and I'm active), but so do my in-laws and my BIL, and they're not. Also, Rivian has said that current R1 owners get bumped up in the queue automatically.

We'll know a little bit more after March 12th when the configurator becomes available. So much depends on all of the variables, including (but definitely not limited to):
  • What drive train do people want (dual, tri, or single)?
  • To LIDAR or not to LIDAR?
  • How much of an early adopter do you want to be?
  • Pricing?
Just be patient...It will be worth the wait, no matter how long that is. We waited a little over two years for our R1S but I know there are active people in the forum who waited a lot longer than that for their LE R1T.
For example, I waited three years and twenty one days exactly to get my R1T from the time I ordered it land I ove it.

There isn't much more you can put in the R2. Maybe up to 110 if you give up other storage areas. Overall it should get a little over 3.0 except as noted when cold. I bet it is about 5% less than R1 Gen large pack range. Our midwest rural area has a lot more l3 charging than 3 years ago but SW Kansas is still a desert.

The above article mentions Rivian is able to scale the R2 up to 155,000 units a year. If there are 300,000 reservations then current reservation holder will have them by Q3 202?
Not every reservation will actually translate to a sale. Additionally, they most likely won't get to that run rate for a few years, unless the demand shows up (which I hope it does!)

It almost never works like that; I’d say *maybe* at most 30% of reservations actually come to fruition. Maybe. So many people drop out (for example, Cybertruck, and Hummer, and Lightning). Other new cars come out, people lose their jobs, the timing ends up being wrong etc. I’d bet that if someone wants an R2, that even without a reservation they will be able to get one within the first 18 months to two years max production starting (assuming they are cranking out 50k+ a year or more)

My family has 2 reservations and won't act on either one.
I reserved 2 on Day 1 and will unlikely use either of them.

I also reserved 2 of them on Day 1. Definitely won't be buying 2 of them. I'd say it's 50/50 at best that I buy even 1.

The conversion rate on reservations will likely be under 25%.
