I think the worst part of the story is that your guide was too busy to call you as soon as they found out!
On the flip side, if the guide was busy coordinating even more deliveries that bodes well for the company and for us.

Still, sucks this happened to OP. Agree with others that as disappointing as it is, it sounds like they’re trying to make it right. Hope you get a working R1T soon.

Just to give you some frame of rederence on getting a loaner right now. Neither the VW or Volvo dealers we work with have had enough cars to have loaners *or* shuttles. The VW dealer has moved to using enterprise. Who also doesn't have cars. Lol.

Rivian is obviously very constrained. At the moment they are trying to get every single truck into the hands of a customer.

I understand you want the truck, but it's way better that they caught the problem before delivering it. The timing of the payment and the delivery is probably something they will change in the future as a result of this, but it's understandable as they are doing this all for the first few times.

I don't think it's reasonable to believe they have brand new Rivian loaners yet with how few trucks are rolling off the line. I would expect Tesla style Uber credits or a standard hertz loaner. It's just the crappy reality of low inventory.

Yep, Ford dealer near me used to give a loaner when you take your car in to get serviced. They stopped doing that last year.

Guide dropped the ball in terms of contacting you in a timely manner. Too busy? No, that’s pathetic. How long did it take him to leave that voicemail? 20 seconds? Should have made the call the second he found out about the problem, regardless of what he was doing.

the problem itself? It sucks, but as others are saying, it’s good they found it and are addressing it.

A loaner? Wow, I’m impressed they came up with an F150. Can’t even get most Ford dealers to do that right now with all the shortages and other issues. Why would you not take it? There are no R1T loaners and probably won’t be for a long time. You haven’t even bought the car yet and they offered you a loaner… that’s freaking amazing.

Paid in full…. No, you transferred money. It’s in an account. You have not paid for the truck nor bought anything at this point. Not until you sign the final paperwork and accept delivery. If it’s going to be more than a few days or they have no ETA in your delivery then have them transfer the money back or issue you a check. If you had to pay a wire fee or other fee to transfer funds, have them reimburse you. As someone who has bought hundreds of vehicles (yes, literally), I recommend not paying for one or signing paperwork to activate financing or whatever until you have sat your butt in the seat, checked it over and are ready to finalize and drive away.

I get it, it’s convenient and they push to get people to pay in advance. Tesla does the same thing. I’ve bought a Model X and Y personally and a 3 for business and all three of them I wrote the check at the delivery appointment after looking them over.

anyway, I hope they fix your R1T and get you driving soon.

You’re delayed one business day at this point and you’re going all Karen wanting a loaner of a vehicle that’s already capacity constrained? You have a right to be annoyed and if you don’t have it in a week then maybe it’s time to start getting upset.

OP should probably not be buying any new car product imho.

If you don't go into this absolutely expecting stupid stuff to break with little to no quality control and essentially being a "beta" tester you weren't paying attention to how this has worked for the past decade.

See my two cars? Know the story behind those two cars? Everyone is just figuring stuff out.

Judge them on their communication and willingness to work with you when things do break. If you get upset about what should have happened yesterday and the truck they can't make materialize in front of you this very instance that's not really going to help you.

The only thing you're entitled to at this point is your money back.

If your brain can't handle a complete model-wide recall that takes years to resolve and you may need a sedative to get you through it, I'd suggest maybe a Rubicon, Tacoma or Discovery or something instead of a Rivian :D

I kinda agree, but in this case, Rivian has also told us their company should be valued at a very high level, approaching or exceeding long standing, globally successful auto companies. Rivian has set expectations really really high. Not saying we should fully believe Rivian can meet those expectations, but Rivian has responsibilities here also, much more than the "normal" startup.

(In this case, I'd have been disappointed, but fully satisfied with the F150 loaner, except maybe complaining a little about going 30 miles to get it)

Just because you pay a lot doesn't make you immune to manufacturing growing pains. This is the ultimate in entitled thinking coupled with delusion of what's possible in light of available evidence.

At this point the message is clear: If we the consumers want this lightning fast development that bypasses the blue-chips, us early adopters are going to have to pay a price in convenience and speed bumps to a brand equilibrium.

I didn't pick the system, but I do understand it and let that comprehension guide my emotions rather than "omg but I wanted my R1T yesterday and I'm paying 3x a Toyota Corolla so I deserve it yesterday and I could care less about any other factor where's my Hummer EV loaner while I wait?!"

It's taken me from August till about nowish to even get the basic lines of communication open with GM over my $40,000 hatchback. It's been rife with all kinds of shenanigans along the way from GM. The idea that a car company caught a defect before the car was delivered and delayed it by a few days on a truck of this caliber, this leading edge? Dear God. Try paying through the nose for an econobox and having its drive train declared defective out the showroom with no communication other than recall notices.

What does your buyer’s agreement say that happens in such a situation?

Clearly Rivian is pushing a system where you pay for the truck prior to taking a delivery. That’s not customer friendly and creates issues like the one OP is having.

Generally speaking, they shouldn’t be able to keep your money if they did not keep up their end of the promise by delivering you the truck. However, I suspect that your agreement has language that addresses what happens in this situation. Moreover, it doesn’t sound like you want to cancel your purchase, you just want them to deliver you a truck. The quickest solution may be to just wait for Rivian to sort out the situation, while you keep on top of them to solve the issue.

This. Just tried to schedule service for our Audi e-tron. They are 6 weeks out for service and 10 weeks if you need a loaner. I am amazed they can provide a loaner. (I'd guess it is a rental.) Not just a loaner but a truck so you have the same functionality.

Pretty sure OP was at the height of emotion when this was posted. Every subsequent post they reply "thank you" and "good advice." Don't get so excited to tell them their reaction was wrong.

Good luck, OP!

I agree - it's like you're at the height of climax and then you have to pull out. Frustrating but hopefully you get to finish the next time.

Consider asking for some accessory item(s) as consideration for your situation. That would be a smart gesture on Rivian's part. Just ask nicely. :)
