So if Rivian sets the price of an R2 at $80,000 and then generously contributes $40,000 towards the purchase, the state will cover the other $40,0000 and customer pays nothing?

California must want to be Oprah. You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!

I read elsewhere it would be for first time EV buyers only, which I'll be one for the R2. 200 million is really nothing for California. I sure would like a chance to get some rebate for R2 though.

Yeah $200 million is nothing but the state (and country) already are in the hole and continuing to just print money to spend. California anticipates a shortfall of at least $3 billion, down from a predicted $18 billion just a few months ago. I’d think the money could be better spent on schools rather than EV credits.

It is a good thing CA has a budget surplus so they can afford to offer handouts like this.
Really should stop calling it a handout. I know most people don't by EVs to help the planet but it does help slow damage in the long run. Also they're not really handouts. Everyone except the uber rich pays into the system and is meant to provide services and help for everyone. And if you're going to complain then that means you should be saying no to oil subsidies, libraries (which gives you free books/rental periods), any public service really, social security, anything related to ACA subsidy, or essentially any function the government does. In fact, don't participate in Halloween. Candy is a handout too.

Sorry, I had a bad day and I just went on a rant there.

I agree. All subsidies except Halloween candy should be eliminated. (Halloween candy is freely provided by individuals so it isn't a subsidy.) Freedom is better. Not perfect, but better.

I find people who haven't lived through the smog of the 60's have little sense of how bad air can get when you spew literally tons of combustion gasses into the air; and the people who don't understand how bad the air can get consider regulations and incentives to clean the air as burdensome or a handout. If you recall a decade or two ago, China had huge air quality problems as well, and they've moved toward more renewable forms of energy production.

I remember the smog being so bad in Los Angeles that my lungs would hurt and you couldn't see a mile's distance because the smog was so thick. I think they said it was like smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. If it is you or your relative who suffers respiratory distress/disease you'd probably have a different attitude about air quality.

If you or a loved one is the person directly impacted by dirty air or dirty water (think cancer) I'm guessing you'd embrace anything that would lessen your/their distress? To me $200 million is a small expense compared to the cost of a life or even the cost to treat thousands of people who have a horrible disease. Freedom isn't available to you if others are polluting the air you breath or the water you drink.

Did you not file for tax credit? ever? Better give that hand out back.

This program wouldn't just help get more people in EVs. It will also help the automakers build and sell more EVs. And more people driving EVs mean what? More incentive for charging networks to expand and improve charging infrastructure.

Talk about speaking against your own interests. Really, why are you even here?!
The tax credit is a windfall for people that can afford to purchase $80K eSUV/eTruck. Yes I did take the credit in the past since it was there - didn't need it or influenced my decision to get an EV. In other words, it was a waste by the government because I wasn't going to leave the money on the table.

The credit was abused even more by way of lease, where there was no price limit. I bought a PHEV priced above the tax credit price limit this past September and I could have gotten the tax credit if I'd leased it. This time, I did not. Instead I just bought it.

As for making the automaker sell more EVs, only Tesla is the profitable non-China automakers of EVs. Tax credit did not add jobs, EV mandate force automakers to change their product lines resulted in jobs in EVs. The best thing was the all EVs across the board got much better. Competiton is helping.

As for the notion of competing with China in EVs, tax credits for the consumers will do nothing to address that. They've already won the current EV battle. The only way to win the war is to leap frog them in some new way that makes their offering non-competitive aside from the price point. Hope it happens.

For the infrastructure, I much rather have seen the total amount spent on the tax credit go towards increasing/improving the grid and charging infrastructure .

I am here because I own a Rivian and aside from these type of thread time to time, there are helpful information posted by the community and I like to learn and contribute back.

Well, folks, so much for the "NO POLITICS" qualifier. One important feature of this program that I see no one yet pointing out is that this program is only eligible for FIRST TIME EV BUYERS. Meaning that I, and likely most of you on this forum, aren't actually eligible. There are also income restrictions, well above the CA average income, but low enough that someone making enough to not really need it would also not qualify.

As a Californian whose taxes are going towards this program, I'm OK with this. I support the idea and balanced compromise of only helping people transition to EVs and not upgrading their EV to another EV.

All, please try to post helpful and respectful content in a way that you'd actually talk to one of your fellow citizens in person, face to face. For those of you posting who aren't Californians, respectfully, it's none of your business what we Californians do with our tax dollars, and arguably, there's no reason to share your opinions.

If billionares in Ca. paid the same % of tax that I pay, Ca. could either loose the residency of the Billionares or pay off its deficet and offer the incentive of no tax on an EV. Their choice, our choice.

I agree. And for this reason the polluters can pay an extra tax to discourage use. A penney increase of the fuel tax each year and an extra bit on registration.

Yes I remember the 1960s and 1970s

Might even be enough to get DW to switch.

Last night on the news, I heard they are going to put car hauling rial road cars on the new bullet train from LA to SF. That will also help with the clean air. Additionally, it would be 50% off for EV cars.

These people take what they enjoy for granted. Worse they speak against what they enjoy and benefit from.
