so i recently noticed that tire/road noise from my OEM Pirellis 20" AT tires has gotten noticeably louder after i hit about 13k miles. tread depth is probably more important than miles. i checked that and all the tires were right around 8/32 at 13k. im now at 15k. i did rotations at 7k and 14k. noise has remained the same - louder.

im happy with the even tread wear thus far and expect to get about 30k miles but just noticed its gotten much louder inside the cabin, particularly at lower speeds 20-40mph. i think the wind noise at freeway speeds may be masking the increased tire noise.

i plan to switch to new tire when its time, probably the Michelin Defender LTX Platinum, but unfortunately i got my full size spare at about 8k miles, so my next set will be the OEM Pirellis again so i can do a 5 tire rotation. 3rd set will be another brand most likely.

anyway, just wanted to note that and see if others are experiencing this increase in noise.

Several people have said this but I don't hear it. I have almost 20k on my 20" OEMs with tread depth of 9/32 remaining. No extra noise that I've noticed.

I'm having this issue. Noise became noticeable around 18k, and now we're at 27,600k. Should get at least 30k out of this set. Because of the noise, I'm considering the Michelin LTX Platinum, but until I find good long term data on safety (considering the different load rating), efficiency and wear with the Platinums, I will probably get another set of the Pirellis when it's time to replace in a few months. The R1S is my wife's daily driver, shuttling 3 kids around, so I'm reluctant to abandon the OEM tires until there's more certainty about the consequences of doing so.

Mine got noisy around 18k. Been moving them around to try and minimize and got it to tolerable. Then they get louder again, so I try and figure out the offending tire and flip it and move it to back. Seems to help alot.

35k now and hoping to get another 5k at least out of them.

Probably will stick with the stock tires as I like them all around. Just noisy.

The 20's are definitely loud when you pass about 18-20k and seem to get worse over time and lack of tread depth. i have done mostly all purpose mode (95%) vs conserve, and didn't even rotate until i took it in for service at 18k miles. I have 25,000 on them now and it's getting a bit unbearable at low speeds 20-45 or so. At highway speeds it actually isn't too bad, but for those of you who use as a daily local commuter and not on the freeways, it's going to be something to plan for once you get to that level of wear. My Meridien used to be loud at 12 on the setting and now i have it cranked to 16 or higher to mask the tire noise at lower speeds. I will say though, that these tires are extremely comfortable and drive great on long trips. I will be replacing with same OEM tires that i bought from another North Carolinian who had bought an R1S and after 300 miles switched them out to the Michelin Defenders. Got a good deal from him, prior to all the road noise getting so loud. Still going to put them on as I want to trek to Colorado this summer/fall and do some real off road trips.

I wish I had that problem at 15K. Mine were worn out at 9K. May have been the alignment as it too 3 months and 5K from new to get it in to the SC. Even then alignment was not great. Still had pulling and tires had worn slower but gone at 9K

I noticed it too at about the same mileage (12,000) and tread depth. SC had it, realignment, rebalanced, STILL same noise.... SC said "signs of "cupping" normal wear , nothing more to do"

So cupping at 12,000 miles is considered "normal" and the road noise is considered "normal"? I didn't agree, but what else am I gonna do?

So thanks for posting, the more data we give them, the more likely positive changes happen in the future.

wow, i haven't heard of anyone having the 20 ATs worn at before 10k. what drive mode and ride height do you use most often? and what type of driving and terrain?

Mostly all purpose and auto height, rarely conserve mode, 5% at most, some off road...The R1T never felt comfortable just cruising down the road. I always had to do some correction unless on Driver +. The alignment sucked from new and still pulls to the left and steering wheel sits 2 degrees counter-clockwise also. I am going in next week to complain again. Going for new tires as soon as it is fixed correctly. Always 2 to 3 months for an appointment.

Mine are embarrassing louder and now has a cupping sound. I have less than 8k miles on them and mostly use Conserve mode so they still have good thread remaining. Will rotate soon at Discount Tire and see if it helps.

If in fact the tires have heal and toe wear(Cupping) a cross rotation will help to promote even tread wear and should reduce the tire noise. :like:

Would lower or higher air pressure have an impact on the noise level we all seem to be having with the 20" AT tires? Trying to find a happy medium between changing out tire and trying to run up a few thousand more miles, but the noise is getting really annoying at 26k miles.

The noise was deafening in mine. I finally got rid of them at around 29K. I went for the Michelin Defender LTX Platinum. Difference is day and night. The Platinum is extremely quiet...hope it stays like this for the next 50- 70K mile.
