if you saw the video from MKBHD, he recently tried charging at a Tesla SC station with the magic dock and there's no way to park at the correct stall and have the cable reach his R1T. Tom Moloughney also tried to charge there with the Lightning and he also had to park in the wrong stall and it barely reached.

even though they knew non-Teslas have charge ports in all sorts of locations depending on manufacturer, Tesla didnt make the cables any longer, they just used the existing cable meant for Teslas for the magic dock.

is Tesla going to invest to retrofit their SC stations with longer cables now? we know they need to design some of their SC stations to accommodate the Cybertruck because of its size and towing but again are they going to accommodate non-Tesla trucks? will Rivian change their port location to the passenger side front? will the adapter have to have some length of cable attached? this is going to be an interesting development.

does anyone know if Tesla has announced they will redesign their SC stations to accommodate non-Teslas with a longer cable or some other retrofit?

Every OE so far has announced a 'spring 2024' target for the adapter + charging capability. IMO Tesla must be planning something to make their (busier) stations more accessible and don't want other vehicles using the stations until they make some sort of modification.

i hope youre right but thats a huge, huge cost for Tesla. maybe they are making those who want access to the SC stations to help pay for the retrofits. lets see what happens.

Short of the NACS > CCS adapter being 6 feet long, I'm not sure how else they're going to accommodate a Ford Lightning charging in any position. Even if they block 2 spots, the cable won't reach the poorly placed charging port (I can say this because our Mach-E GT has the port in the same location, TERRIBLE design).

There's no such thing as the "correct" stall, now that we're all equals at the superchargers. Tesla owners will just have to suck it up and deal with the same parking/orientation issues that CCS users have had to deal with for years. And yes, it will hurt supercharger availability numbers and will hurt users' opinions of the convenience of the superchargers, just as this issue has hurt EA and others for years.

From what I know about Tesla, this is exactly what I expect to happen.

well, in the Tesla world there is such a thing as the correct stall otherwise you cant charge. and it goes to my point of not getting too happy about this just yet.

yeah, makes a lot more sense than them doing any retrofit. Tesla aint gonna do manufacturers any extra favors by investing millions to do that.

I like the move and will get the adapter once it is available, more charging options is always better.

I do expect growing pains though, Tesla is moving from a closed system where they controlled both sides and that is way easier to maintain. They are moving into an area where they do not control the vehicle side any longer. Hopefully it will be fairly smooth but as we saw in the Magic Dock testing videos, several people had connection issues and were unable to charge with the Magic Docks.

The problem is that isn't not an adapter, it's a 6 foot long dongle. I fear that this is going to leave the CCS only vehicles out in the cold. If everyone in NA moves to NACS then us looking to keep our trucks 15 years will be SOL when it comes to DC charging.

And in the Rivian world there is also such a thing as the correct stall, otherwise you can't charge. But it's a different stall than the Tesla one.

Because Rivian is now paying for access to the supercharger network, we as customers of that network are allowed to use the stall that is the only correct one for *us*.

The Tesla SC cable is liquid cooled. An adapter that is an extension cable will require cooling or increasing the cable size 3x - 4x to carry more current without cooling. Otherwise, they will not be able to charge at full rate.

My cynical side says Elon will purposely not change the cable to dissuade use of the superchargers from non-Teslas. That way he gets the money from Ford, GM, Rivian, etc. but sill has only Tesla's charging there.
That’s not what Wall Street is expecting. They see Tesla making huge profits from GM, Ford, Rivian and others using their Superchargers. If they don’t find a way to accommodate these vehicles they won’t meet shareholder’s expectations.
