I like to get peoples perspective on how long a "early adopter" period is? What are your thoughts on that?Maybe you already told me thoughts on that and if so sorry....i am feeling like we are at or near end on that. These have been in production I believe over a year and a half now and I think production well into the 20k's.
Yeah that phrase gets used way too much here. It's basically a fanboy justification for acceptance of poor quality assurance.

Wow, that really sucks. Basically they just said, live with it. That like a fingernail on chalkboard annoyance sound.
Nail on the chalkboard is every time I call my wife and she rants about how much she hates her R1S. I could be the first Rivian divorce!

That is ridiculous. I had mentioned that ours did it a few times after a fast charge and I chalked it up to cooling the battery. Inside the cabin it was crazy loud. My wife was like wtf when it kicked on like that but I assured here it was just because of the fast charge, etc.

I wouldn't continue to drive it as the noise inside is literally distracting when driving. Only good news is it seems like it's "stuck" in a certain mode and maybe will completely fail soon.

My service experience at the factory service center was less than optimal (they didn't fix anything) so good luck!
This behavior IS normal. The cooling system goes into overdrive to dissipate all the heat accumulated in the batteries in the wake of a big charging session.

I've experienced this in every R1 I've DCFC-ed.

The noise that the OP is sharing is definitely not normal.

Its sounds like the internal impeller blades on the AC refrigerant pump, or the air circulation fan are making contact with the pump/fan housing. I've experienced this with older cars that have improperly balanced cabin air circulation fans.

I would demand that this issue be escalated to the regional manager. Unacceptable that they are trying to convince you it is normal.

I’m having the same issue with mine. R1s. It’s worse in the Texas heat, it eventually goes away when the car has cooled enough. The Houston service center said it’s normal also which I didn’t care for the answer but it’s not like they were going to do anything about it no matter how much you insist.

They acknowledged in the ticket it’s a known issue and they are working on a solution. It’s definitely annoying.

Rivian tested their vehicles all up north and in the winter in snow and mountains but never tested it in the Texas heat.

Maybe I’ll email RJ also.

That really sucks, hopefully a solution is found soon. Sorry bro.

I agree. It is a phrase that suggest that poor performance is an expectation of a new company. When I got mine I thought it would mean a few more problems than normal with the truck, but....I really thought they would be ready for it and deal with them in a very fast and proficient way, to make sure to keep company image in top form.

I understand the cooling during/after a fast charge. Our last trip was the first time we heard the same noise as the OP but it did stop around 5 mins after we started driving. It was ridiculously loud, rattling interior parts. That is absolutely not normal and was not present on our previous charges. I was curious if it was attributed to them being more aggressive on the charge curve and working the cooling system harder in the latest updates?

Mine does it every time. 10 minutes after a charge or 10 hours.

Great question. IMO, yes, on one hand I agree we are getting close to the end, especially regading Rivian’s service performance and operational expectations. On the other hand, we all bought these vehicles at an early point in time, and it’s their very first production design with inherent flaws and limitations. Five years from now, some possible yet to be seen issues are still the result of being an early adopter of a brand new product of a startup company, right?

I had my R1T through the hottest part of the Kansas City summer last year and I never noticed this noise. I’ve heard the A/C compressor running, but only when I’ve purposefully listened for it. For perspective, I took my truck in twice to the service center for wind noise from the driver’s window. So I’m picky and if this were happening with my truck I’d certainly have noticed it.

From the anecdotal evidence I’ve seen in this thread and others, it seems to be vehicles that are relatively recent builds. I wonder if something changed with the component supplier. Or we know Rivian is continually updating its build processes and maybe this process change didn’t quite work out.

Good luck OP. I feel your pain.

I just submitted my service ticket for issues at delivery. This was one of them. My new R1S with 77 miles is making the same noises in your video. I first experienced it once I got it home. It got so bad to the point I could feel vibrations in my steering wheel and floor. I understand it was super hot today in Houston TX but wtf?! It went away as soon as I tuned off the AC. Btw I was sweating this afternoon on my drive home. The AC definitely seems to be an issue. Also there was so much water under the car.

Mine does the same. Dallas SC - “this is totally normal”…
Possible that the majority of Dallas Area Rivians are experiencing this noise issue as they are all experiencing the same environmental exposure. So it IS normal for them!

We are picking up our R1S in Dallas next week and sure hope that ours does not do this. I've watched more than my fair share of R1T and R1S videos and this noise was never featured in any of them that I can recall.

If Rivian considers this noise normal then they really need to be reminded of their "The Sounds of Rivian" story:
“Our goal was to be extremely intentional about our vehicle sounds and not detract from what remains one of the more compelling reasons to drive an R1T or R1S: they’re quiet.” Aaron L.Director of Noise, Vibration and Harshness. https://stories.rivian.com/sounds-o...s, the R1T,fully appreciate until driving one.
