On the Rivian web site under the R1S information they give the range with the dual motors as being 390 miles. Is this an error or are they planning to have a max pack for the R1S?

Yes, but only with Dual Motor. I think it was 350 miles of range with Large Pack and 390 with the Max.

390 miles is the advertised range of the R1S with the Max Pack (until they do an official EPA estimate.)

Regular dual motor will be just shy of 100K. More than likely in the 90s. Dual motor enchanted will be mid to upper. It’s a 10K upgrade on the R1T so I always assume the same or close for the R1S.

I would think the SUV would get better range than the pickup becase it is more aerodynamic unless the max battery is slightly smaller in the R1S

Might be a stupid question but does the dual motor have a longer range than the quad motor because the quad motor takes more battery power? Just seems different considering the quad is more versatile and expensive yet has less range.

The vehicle requires the same amount of power to move forward for quad or dual (ignoring slight differences in weight). So the drive system needs to deliver the same amount of power, whether it is 1 motor, 2 motors or 4 motors (the amount of power per motor is spread differently, but needs to total the same). The dual motor system appears to be slightly more efficient (either in converting electrical power in the inverters, mechanically, or a combo of both), so the range is slightly better in the dual motor for the same battery pack.

you'd think that but its actually the opposite. the R1T gets better range at every battery size and tire config. ?‍♂

Ah ok makes sense thank you for the information!

Early on, even Rivian was touting the S as having a range advantage over the T due to aero. Makes one wonder how things ended up reversed.

yeah, makes you wonder if its aero differences, efficiency or something else. we know the R1S is slightly lighter but negligible at those weights.

Also important to note that the default All-Purpose mode in the duals is similar to Conserve in the quads because the automatic AWD uses primarily the front axle until it decides the rear is needed.

And the range is pretty close.

R1S Dual Large 21's All Purpose = 352 miles
R1S Quad Large 21's on Conserve = 332 miles

The difference is even less on the R1T, something like only 4 mile difference if I recall correctly.
