Rivian's head of software says the company is not trying to be like Tesla regarding automation

Article:
https://www.businessinsider.in/thel...egarding-automation/articleshow/114961623.cms

"We are not necessarily chasing full-self driving, we’re not chasing robotaxis; We’re not chasing a specific autonomy level because we think, philosophically, that it’s really about the incremental features, whether it’s safety or convenience that you can progressively add to the car. In some cases, some of the automakers end up in a battle over winning standards instead of really delivering better features for customers."

I see Rivian as a Driver's vehicle, hence FSD shouldn't be prioritized. Assistance, yes, FSD, no thanks :)

Glad to hear it's not something prioritized in the roadmap.

Agree. Plus it's too capital intensive. I always said Tesla should have come out with a "dumb" car. No cameras, no crazy power. Just a commuter with rwd, decent range, and some buttons. I'd rather have a car I feel comfortable in and enjoy the driving experience than something that's missing everything but can drive itself.

I second this. The majority of my driving is mountain passes and city driving. I bought a Rivian because I enjoy driving and especially in the mountains, I'm happy to drive. Long straight highway sections however are nice to have the current iteration of Driver+ it works where I want it to.

Have had FSD the better part of 6 years. Hard pass. Highway assisted with excellent lane centering including slight adjustments when near other vehicles is all that's required.

I'm ok with that I like driving myself, I never use those features in any of my cars and wouldn't have subscribed to them with Rivian either. I do hope they spend more time actually programming more meaningful features that I'd use like teen driver, valet mode, more native apps and etc.

I like to drive, especially in my R1T! I have no desire to be chauffeured around by a self driving vehicle. I get a certain joy out of being involved with the ride. If all one wanted to do was get from point A to point B, with no effort, then I guess self driving might be a thing. Obviously, there are scenarios where self driving capabilities would be advantageous. Still, it seems over rated to me. But, then again, who knows what the future holds?

I agree as well. Smart lane keeping/cruise control, recognizing cars around and keeping distance, emergency braking and speed reduction, detection of upcoming sharp turns, pedestrian detection, and auto-lane change. If we get all that, I'm pretty happy.

I'll let Tesla chase full level 5 autonomy, and if that's important in a car I own, I can make a switch in 5+ years.

I agree with everyone else here; if it had autonomous driving at the current state of that technology, I wouldn't use it. I still trust my driving far more than anyone's full self-driving software. I'm not going to get killed or kill someone else because I was too lazy to drive myself.

translation: "We can't afford the investment in autonomous driving."

That's perfectly okay, they have to make hard business choices with dwindling cash and need to spend precious software development dollars on features that will move units today - they don't have the cash or runway to chase Tesla, Waymo, or even GM's Cruise.

I suspect more Rivian buyers, and prospective buyers, would prefer Chromecast, more efficiency improvements in motors, electronics and control systems eeking higher EPA ranges through software optimization and app improvements.

Rivian can't cover all the bases, they are too sub-scale. But they do an incredible job punching above their weight class and adding focus should be commended.

Telsa has been working on FSD *forever* and IMO it's no where near ready. What if that deer was a person or motorcycle? Saying "It's ok, that deer thing, it's an edge case" is unacceptable to me. A 5 year old would have recognized that as an obstacle.

It would take tons of time and $$ that Rivian can use elsewhere, or not spend at all.

You mean, Rivian isn’t planning on releasing a steering wheel-less vehicle any time soon??
