I've been enjoying my R1S for almost a year now. It's been a great car. But, for the life of me, I can't understand why the speedo is tucked away to the right and the "ghost cars" are right in the middle. Firstly, what use is the "vehicle display" showing my car and the other cars around me? It's wrong most of the time anyway.

Would it be at all possible for Rivian to move the speedo to the middle of the screen?

Could they move it to the center? Yes

Will they move it to the center, or do other center display changes users have suggested? To date, no.

You're right, I doubt Rivian did any research at all on this subject. /s

Okay I hear you.

But I have a serious complaint.

WHEN YOU SLIDE THE MUSIC PLAYER TO THE RIGHT OFF THE SCREEN. YOU CAN SEE THE LITTLE OF THE SPOTIFY LOGO STILL.

This drives me UP THE WALL. It's like 3 pixels wide, if that. But still. IT IS there. Such a small thing but let's be honest. It's like a $100k car. The designers have to know about it..

Right?

Knowing what we now know about limits of gen 1's computing power, it's easy to second guess and pass negative judgement. Yes, it makes more sense to have speedo in the middle, now that we know we can't have FSD. But if you hop into the way back machine and be a fly on the walls at Rivian HQ, they probably didn't know then what is known now... and have prioritized the UI in such a way.

I don't know about you, but I don't drive with my eyes glued to the speedo. Most of the time I go with flow of traffic and occasionally glance down and to the right at it. Usually when traffic is sparse and I want to confirm if I am not going too fast for my own good. If you are concerned about your driving, I believe there is a feature where you can have the system warn you whenever you go over the posted limit. IIRC, it's an audible cue, so no need to take your eyes off the road.

FSD or not, they should put the speedo in the middle where the cruise control setpoint and marked speed limit signs appear.

The center panel is just to make people feel better about using Driver+; its usefulness is disproportionate to how much space it takes up in the cluster. They could make it smaller and use the real estate for something useful.

The middle is where the tach goes, silly! Haha

Presumably that's leaving a hint there to remind you that you can drag the music player back out if you want. In general, hidden interface actions ("allow sliding from right but don't show anything telling user that you can do it") don't work as well / get used as often as when there is an indication that you can do something.

I should note that possibly my single biggest irritant with our R1S (which we love) is that if I have the steering wheel in a place that it's comfortable (and, thus, safer), then I can't see the speedometer.

My old Honda Odyssey had the same problem, but not much Honda could do about that... Rivian could put a sophomore CS co-op on this and give me 3 alternate driver screen layout options in half a day.

It's absolutely trivial on their part which is why it's so frustrating for me.

Interestingly, if I drive down the road with my right turn signal on then I can see the speedometer just fine since it draws it above the blindspot camera while that's showing :)

All my cars have a Speedo on one side and a tach on the other. It's annoyed me since I was a teenager.
