So, I've read (what feels like) hundreds of posts on tires for our heavy beasts. I'm going to be switching from the EOM Pirelli 20" tires (275 65-R20) eventually, and I've been wondering what to go to.

Among all the posts, there mentions here and there of a particular tires warranty. 70,000 miles. Only 45,000 miles. etc.

@Discount Tire or anyone else, what does this warranty actually mean for our Rivians? According to Discount Tire's website, the 20" Pirelli AS Plus 3 tires have a 70,000 mile warranty. If I get 35,000 miles and the tread is no longer legal, what does that actually mean? Do I get a 50% rebate when I purchase my next set? Or does the weight of our vehicle create some carve-out exception so I'd get nothing? I searched the forums but couldn't find anything.

Thanks so much!

Pro-rated refund towards another set if your tires comes with tread wear warranty.

Double check to see they have a tread wear warranty.

Most shops should be strict and only sell/warranty what has the correct speed and load rating for your vehicle.

YMMV when you start going outside of approved tires and then ask for warranty claim.

Each manufacturer sets their own terms, my understanding is Michelin has one of the better warranties, a credit is issued to the place of service, they pass the credit to your replacement purchase. Will need to be OEM tire and rotations will need to be documented (same place of service with service record).

You are pretty much spot on. If the tire comes with a written mileage warranty from the manufacturer, the tires will be prorated based on mileage received. As long as the tires are worn evenly (no alignment issues and the like) you will be eligible for an adjustment.

Thank you all!

If I install a non-OEM size tire (say the 275/60-R20 that many are going with) on my R1S (EOM size = 275/65-R20), does that mean i have NO chance of claiming any warranty credit?

Also, is it likely a 70,000 mile warranty tire is going to last that long on one of these heavy beasts?

@EarlyAdptr Great questions!

1.) If you purchase replacement tires with a written mileage warranty, we will follow the manufactures terms and conditions and will prorate them based on written mileage warranty. If the vehicle is running a staggered fitment, the mileage warranty is typically reduced by 50%. (Mis alignment and mechanical wear issues will not be eligible for adjustment).

2.) Tire mileage is going to vary with different climates and driving conditions. I think, as a general rule of thumb, we know that tires on some vehicles (Rivian and others like them) will wear at a faster rate and may fall short of the expected mileage warranty. I will advise my customers that the expectation will be the same with the new replacement tires being installed. (Nature of the beast)

Hope that helps!

I have dealt with Michelin and Continental. Both were great to deal with on warranty. Both for Electric vehicles also.

The pirelli specifically stated no tread wear warranty. Read the warranty for each specific manufacturer to see what they cover and what they don't.

As far as OE tires go, as long as it's the correct speed and load rating your usually ok deviating on size a bit but you will need to prove they were rotated. You also want to make sure your 4 wheel alignment is good before installing them so they don't suffer uneven wear.

I worked at a tire shop when I was 19... that's been coming up on 30 years ago now 👴🏻

If some things changed I'm sure someone will correct me. 😀

As stated by others, read the warranty carefully, and note the part about "even wear". This is usually what disqualifies a treadwear warranty.

As an example, here's Goodyear. You have "obligations". While it does not spell it out, having written proof of rotation is probably a good idea.

If the tread wears evenly down to the treadwear indicators (worn to 2/32") before delivering the warranted mileage, the tire will be replaced on a prorated basis, if the original invoice is presented showing the vehicle mileage when the tires were originally installed.

....

Owner's Obligations
  • You must rotate your tires in accordance with the prescribed rotation patterns as recommended by either the vehicle manufacturer or Goodyear, Dunlop or Kelly Tires
  • When making a claim under the Tread Life Limited Warranty, you must present your original tire purchase invoice showing the tire description, mileage, and the date the tire(s) were installed
  • You must present the tire to be adjusted to a Goodyear, Dunlop or Kelly store; tires replaced as an adjustment become the property of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company or Goodyear Canada, Inc.
  • You must pay any other applicable taxes and government-mandated charges for any additional service you order at the time of adjustment relating to any unique applications requiring mounting, demounting, or balancing
  • No claim will be recognized unless submitted on a Goodyear, Dunlop or Kelly claim form (supplied by a Goodyear, Dunlop or Kelly store) completely filled out by you, the owner, or your authorized agent when presenting the tire for adjustment
