Toyota is a great company. The people are great. They work in a "matrix." Almost all decisions have to be made with endless people involved. It might have worked for them in the past but might kill them in the new environment. It's hard to fathom such a large company going down but if they and the other big companies don't make changes, they will be eaten up by the upstarts.

It does happen in tech industry. While not exactly the same, look at Intel, HP/Compaq and IBM. They were the undisputed, unbeatable hardware vendors in the 90s and early 2000s.

The biggest auto market is China. They are going electric and Japan isn't building electric. It's a Kodak moment.
