Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
See official Rivian announcement:

I thought this was an interesting article for anyone wondering if their favorite discontinued color might ever reappear on a future Rivian product.

IF Compass Yellow (one of my favs) does make a return I hope they make more than 10 of them. I also hope it doesn’t only appear on the highest of trims.

Just a psy-op to get people to wait to lessen the initial demand and to stop people from looking elsewhere

Forest Edge is back for a limited time, so that's cool.

I mean, I get it, cool idea. But a car is not like a sneaker. They are leagues and magnitudes more expensive. One can't just pick up the latest hot item when it cost north of $80k.

IMO they need to do more than just colors to get people invested. The Sand Dune release with new wheels and interior was probably the best way to go about it. Enough to push someone on the fence. And to be honest, these are probably going to be limited to the highest trim to justify the decision. Shame, but also just economics.

Forest Edge is back?! Nice. Seems like it’s only available on the Dual-motor R1T/S, whereas the Tri and Quad get Slate Sky. You get the Max Pack battery ($7,000) with it, so $2,000 for a unique interior. I think it’s a bummer that it’s limited to three exterior colors though. I do love the dark brown wood trim or the lighter wood of the Slate Sky. Obviously more expensive to make than the black and white/gray wood trims.

I hope I win one of these EV raffles this Summer, because that’s the only way I’d be able to afford any of this. Otherwise it’s leasing an R2 or bust for me. And then maybe buying an R3 depending on the trims/prices.

Ok I thought at first it was $9k for just the interior :CWL: but it includes the max pack + darkout package and wheels, sound + vision package and white, forest green or half moon paint is included also. So that's a great deal relatively to their other pricing. Max pack is $7k on it's own.

And the bolded part in the quote below from Jeff Hammoud is why those who want bright/unusual colors aren't getting them on R2 for now. Rivian don't want to build R2 during the 2026 ramp and have units either sit unsold or take much longer to sell because people don't want the color, when they can build units that are sold before they even come off the line.

“When you design a car that has to meet the masses and a lot of people, you automatically have to go to a little bit more safer, more neutral,” Hammoud said. “But then we also see that with our colors. Like our Compass Yellow is one of our lowest take-rate colors when we had it, but the people who have it absolutely love it. And that’s where we want to be able to offer some of these things in ways that cater to some of those customers who are a little bit more adventurous, but still meeting our core demographic.”

My impression is that used Compass Yellow R1's are now selling at maybe a $3K-5K premium, relative to muted colors.

There's definitely a market for bright colors.... Us included.

Best wishes!

Yes, that’s right. You get a lot of extra stuff. They’re trying to entice buyers to get an R1 while everyone waits for the R2. According to RJ it’s going to take at least 18 months to fully ramp the R2, so Rivian needs to keep selling the R1 line. If someone has the money I’m sure they wouldn’t be disappointed.

I don’t think a Gen 3 R1 will be released for several more years. Rivian needs to focus on R2, the Georgia Plant, R3, AI, and autonomous driving. They’ll circle back eventually if they can justify it. If they release an R2T then all bets are off.

I think they can make upgrades to R1 which don’t need to be covered by the term “gen3”. Items such as the haptic halo steering wheel.

That’s true. Seems like an easy fix. Maybe a Gen 2.5, if you will.

Yeah I'm having trouble seeing the target demographic here. Someone who loves R1 but not enough to buy one yet, just waiting months or years in case Rivian produces the right color for them.

Agreed - hence my callsign Yellow R1T, which was terminated prior to spot in line. Had to settle for Canyon Red which still blows away all the sewer mud blended palette options in the R2 lineup.

I just ordered a water bottle in Red Canyon, maybe comes w/ R2X and/or MY28? But no Compass Yellow bottle offered, I suspect that color is dead.
