Are folks not waiting a few months for the Gen 3 autonomy hardware?
Some will some won’t my guess is 70-80% of ppl with orders will take deliver now assuming the maths on price and features (other than LiDAR availability) line up with their expectations.

I believe there is another thread for that topic, but I am waiting. This will hopefully be the last car I buy as I hold my cars for a long time. Currently driving a 2005 CR-V which I will reluctantly give up for the R2.

Same here. I’m waiting. Look at all the Gen 1 R1 owners on here. I can’t end up with a car that has limited features compared to one the company already said they will launch the same year.

Some people really don't give a hoot about hands free, self-driving. Cruise Control and maybe lane assist is more than enough for me.

My wife and I enjoy driving our truck enough that some weekends we just go out and find the twisty roads near by, drop the suspension and go bombing around. Such fun!

It's not a few months though. Seems like limited availability at the end of 2026 and mostly for 2027. Could be 8 or 9 months. And it doesn't sound like the limited launch edition deal would be available at that point so no freebies like tow package and autonomy+"

I will probably wait as I'm leaning towards the lighter interior that won't be available till late 2026.

Whelp, going by that I'm last in line. Ordered March 2025, no R1 ownership, and mid-atlantic receives no attention from them. Add in I want the lighter interior, probably won't get until 2027 at this rate. ugh, will my car hold out until then?

these types of semi-active dampers have been around for decades, i doubt that is going to be the point of weakness or concern for a model like this.
Yeah, as much as I would love the power of the Performance version, the Premium hits the sweet spot for both budget and features. I hope the active suspension is an option on the Premium, really do believe it will make a difference out on the roads...but it looks like only the Performance will get it.

I love driving my truck, especially off-road or country roads. But I do want autonomous features on this car. Especially if you plan on keeping it for 5-7 years, which puts you at 2033, when lack of autonomous features will stand out more. I may be in the minority though.

Yeah - my post was more in regards to how important to an individual Lidar is. For Rivian, it's totally needed to keep up.

My only real fear is that as the autonomy side develops more, the people that do like to drive will end up with a subpar experience. That's something that I would love someone to as Rivian engineering and design leadership.

That's the thing - it's NOT going to be just "a few months".

RJ has said publicly that the Gen 3 hardware will roll out in early 2027. And then to get any new driving features that utilize the new hardware it will take maybe another year. There's this false narrative going around that you just have to wait a few months and then you'll get point-to-point driving for free immediately. That's just not the case. Launch Edition will be over by then, so to get an equivalent vehicle next year you'll have to pay for the lifetime Autonomy+ and tow package that you get for free with the LE. The Gen 3 hardware equivalent to the LE is going to cost maybe $5k more (even if the lidar part is free) and will not be available for another year and you won't be able to do point-to-point for maybe a year after that. Some of this is an educated guess, but that's also the thing - Rivian is NOT promising instant point-to-point driving (or other features), it's just promising that it will upgrade the hardware to something they believe will be capable of that in time.

The people who are going to complain the loudest are the ones who believe this nonsense that if you wait just "a few months" you will get a FSD R2 for the same price as an LE. That's not reality, and you're only fooling yourself if you believe this.

If you want to wait for your mythical $45k tri-max R2 (or any other non-LE configuration which has no definite timeline yet) with full autonomy, then go ahead and wait. Just don't be saying Rivian lied to you about the timeline if that never comes. Meanwhile, I will be driving and enjoying my LE R2 which I got for what will seem to be a bargin-basement price two years from now. The people who wait are the ones who will be missing out.

I'm 4th in line. I've been here for over a year now, if you stop by to say hello, I might be in the tent, so just holler.

Also, please don't knock over my poop bucket ...

Meh, I doubt the lidar will make much difference over the time I expect to own the vehicle (around 5 years)... So I'm fine without it. It will still have what my R1S currently has, which is fine by me. I'm sure the lidar versions will be deprecated by the time I'm looking for my next car anyway.
