Picked up a rock strike the other day on the freeway. Cracked the windshield in the far passenger side corner. The Safelite folks tell me that it can't be repaired since both layers of glass are cracked. This is a crack, not a hole. The longest line is a little less than 5 inches.

Rivian R1T R1S Replace windshield or live with the crack? 1676154104252

I have an appointment to replace the windshield at the Bellevue service center, but am wondering if it really needs to be repaired. All previous windshield cracks I've had have been much larger and more pronounced.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

BTW: the Safelite guy told me that they are working on getting the calibration setup for Rivian. They need that to be authorized to replace windshields and won't work on one without being able to calibrate any cameras/sensors on vehicles they service.

Looks like it’s near the very bottom? I would probably have Safelite or someone else use crack repair on it and wait until there are more options for replacement. Unless it’s just really bugging you…

Repair the damage as best they can without replacing the windshield until it either travels further up the windshield, or more damage in an area within your sightline.

I'd also have Safelite do a chip repair.. if they refuse, get a kit from Amazon and do it yourself. If it holds, it holds... if it doesn't, well you're only out a couple of bucks.

Does your state have full glass w/zero deductible like NY and several other states?

I have a $500 deductible on the glass.

I did get a kit prior to this, just in case. Unfortunately, I can't use it in winter temperatures and only have a carport, not a garage. Safelite told me that they don't try to do any repair if both layers of glass are damaged. Bummer!

The DIY kits are decent, can last awhile, and can prevent cracks from spreading. That is also a good location to give it a go. The two longer cracks may creep on you so move quickly if you can.

I’d pick up one of the DIY kits and give it a shot. I’ve had a repair using one last for many, many years without spreading.

Find a highly rated glass repair place, other than safelite. I would not replace one piece of trash (fuyao glass) with another piece of trash (fuyao glass).

100% repair until 3rd party glass is available.

I had one on my R1T that was similar and it spread the entire vertical of the windshield within about a week. When Safelight looked at it the day after it happened, they said they couldn't repair it due to the location (too low on the windshield). Had Rivian replace it at the tune of $1,900+. Thankfully I have a $100 deductible.

A week or so later, I got a chip in my R1S! Dead center of driver's view. Well, I just patched that one and said I'll wait for the next chip before replacing that glass.

I heard it’s over $2k to replace it. Not sure it’s worth it for something that small. I would ask someone to fill it in so that it doesn’t spread but otherwise, save the $2k for a bigger crack.

This is everybody’s reminder to get glass insurance if your state doesn’t already provide it.

Do you have Nationwide through Rivian?

One of the reasons I went with them was the added perk of including glass coverage with no deductible.

I believe this coverage is specific to their deal as Rivian’s “in-house” provider.

I had an almost identical crack. Safelite came out and "repaired" it - it looked great. Next day I came out and it had grown to about a 12 inch crack across the bottom of the windshield. Still haven't decided what to do yet because I have the windshield tinted and ceramic coated and I don't want to pay for that again.

Nope, but thanks for the heads up. Seriously thinking about changing my insurance...
