RAN charging how much???

Have said it many times, apparently striking a very raw nerve with several RAN/other charging-network loyalists on here in the process.

One more time. In my view, Rivian decided to join the world of the EV-charging scammers and extortionists, ripping people off with ridiculous electricity costs at quite a few of its charging locations, especially noticeable when somebody else's fast charger some 500 ft. away may be cheaper.

This outrage will continue as long as there are plenty of sucker...I mean EV/charging network fanboys who gladly pay such ridiculous prices and who also sheepishly swallow the justification Kool-Aid from the said charging networks for their "fair" prices.

The geat Tesla Supercharger network by and large always comes out on top with lower juice prices. The supreme leader in the EV world having even THE bestest, most ultra reliable and ubiquitous charging network. For less $, full stop. Forever the real and only go-to charging network for my Rivian.

(2) Consistently renewable power, even when Rivian has to pay more for it;
(3) Seamless, reliable plug-and-charge, automatically billed to our credit or debit card; and
(4) Profits, if there are any, go to Rivian, stabilizing the company so Rivian's service network will be there as long as our vehicles last."

Yep, most of that pretty much sums it up for Tesla as well when charging my Rivian there, except Tesla does it for LESS!!! How shocking!

Oooooh boy.... let's settle the tone down a little bit here.

You are making generalizations about some things, while undervaluing others.

For example, not every RAN location is more expensive than nearby Tesla locations - there are several in the Northwest that are lower for example, even when taking the Tesla membership rate into account - discussed in this very thread! So let's try to agree that things are variable.

You also dismiss things like "consistently renewable power" like its a bad thing. Considering Rivian's ethos/mission statement of "Keep the World Adventurous, Forever", walking the walk of using only renewable energy for the charging network is a big deal, and something that attracts people to using it. (BTW, nowhere on Tesla's page about Supercharging is there a claim that is uses 100% renewable energy. It doesn't mention renewable energy at all.)

Finally, you write as if what your opinion is turns out to be the end-all, be-all of things. It's not. It's your opinion. Guess what? People are gonna have different opinions, and will make their decisions in life based on those opinions.... just like you do.

I don't hold you in contempt for using exclusively Tesla fast chargers - I don't hold anyone in contempt for any use of them (otherwise I would have to hold myself in contempt, and now I'm thinking about Jim Carrey in "Liar Liar"....). Maybe just lessen the vitriol and even out the tone of your statements?

I agree. Value and competition go hand in hand. Everyone will make a choice based on their situation when they pull up somewhere and need to plug in. Sometimes I go to a more expensive gas station for convenience. Sometimes I shop around if I'm not in a hurry.

Yes RAN is pricey but Rivian is also a fledgling network and I for one am just happy there are additional DCFC options, RAN included. The more fast chargers, the less barriers to road tripping an EV. Yes it’s expensive to DCFC but that’s what home charging is for. DC is a convenience not an everyday thing. If you cannot charge at home, an EV might not make economic sense.

In NorCal I have Solar w/ Batterys. PG&E charges .32 / KW while the Tesla charger 1 mile away is now charging .33 at 0700. November thru Febuary, I don't get enough Sun to bring the battery pack up to 30% so I use Tesla basically the same price...

I don't charge enough on the road to be concerned about pricing.
If the charger works I am happy to just get on down the road.

On a trip last week I was pleased to see the RAN pricing in Quartzite, AZ had decreased (0.53) since I last used it a couple of months ago. The Wickenburg site was even cheaper (0.48).

With Ionna supposedly building chargers next door to the RAN in Quartzite (no construction yet) there will be four networks to choose from and over 130 dispensers in this small AZ town. Shame Prescott only has EA and 4 DC fast chargers in the whole city. Yeh I know Quartzite is on the main I-10 route between LA and PHX but I’d love to see more options come to locations that have no choice.

I understand there are RAN stations in obscure "adventure" areas. But otherwise every one I've seen has been built across the street from, or in the same lot, or really close to Tesla and others. It makes no sense unless you're going to compete. Quartzsite was built across the street from Tesla, but also putting it across the street from most things you want (huge store, bathrooms). I was hassled by a local cop for jaywalking over there. LOL

The only RAN in Phoenix is in the same lot as Tesla. Why?

In Kingman the RAN puts you by a very shady/shitty c-store and not much more. The Tesla station is next to an EV museum, train museum, and 20 food options.

Keep in mind all the RAN locations were planned back in 2020, well before all the NACS business.

Agree. Except the posts here are saying the RANs are in locations where there is a ton of cheaper fast charging available and the RAN is therefore empty. So, what’s the point of RANs that are in locations already able to serve fast chargers more cheaply? Those RANs end up not being another option.

If RANs filled in the gaps where there was no infrastructure, that would make more sense to me. To be fair, some of those sites do exist.

Hate to point this out as it is a sad truth of history. I’m currently recharging at a RAN in Benton Harbor, MI

It is here as a midway charge location between Detroit and Bloomington so internal Rivian teams can charge on company lines when traveling between sites. It’s also a great place for me. Happy it’s here. Seriously. Happy.
