I don't know but I would speculate the following variables based on what folks here have deduced:

The "Lauch Edition" will not be the much-touted $45K base model, but a more expensive model with more upscale trim and technology, but not the Lidar.

No one knows when the $45K base model will be released, but likely before the Lidar Version, which is speculated to come out no earlier than 2027.

Prices are expected to be revealed on March 12, and the on-line configuration page some weeks later, perhaps in May, but hopefully before June 20, to make "spring" self-imposed deadline.

Not everyone that made a reservation will follow through, much will depend on prices, models available, the state of the economy, etc.

Don't be surprised if, once the Lidar equipped version comes out, there is a surge of low mileage used non-Lidar R2s suddenly available on the used market at discount prices.

If you buy early, you are going to pay more for fewer features and buggy, unrefined first editions. If you wait, you may be able to snag the cheaper base model or find a really good deal on a slightly used R2. If you wait for the Lidar equipped model, you will likely get a vehicle with more resale value than the non-Lidar model.

I reserved my R2 about 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if anyone knew how many reservations there are and how long it will take to build them all. I know I’m really really late to the game but just wondering if it’ll probably be mid to late 2027 or even 2028 before I could get my R2. Or could it by rare chance be earlier in 2027.
With the current number of reservations, deliveries will likely be mid to late 2027, possibly stretching into 2028. There’s a small chance it could arrive earlier, but it’s unlikely.

What do you mean you deduced that the launch version will not be the $45k model? It was clear from the media event two weeks ago that the launch version is the dual motor and likely $55-60k so no deduction needed.

I would also take issue with the assertion that the launch edition will be “buggy and unrefined” and “have fewer features”. Other than Lidar there is no change and it is quite possible the launch edition includes for free the performance package. We will know more next month.

As for the self imposed deadline it was end of Q2 not end of spring and June 20th.

The LiDAR upgrade includes the RAP1 Rivian silicon. Subtle, but the new autonomy platform should enable more future capability.

Just curious.....where was it "made clear" what the launch addition price is? I suspect your range is correct, but it is a guess. I'm not sure what to guess the reservation to build percentage will be. My family has 2 reservations and won't act on either one.

Hoping non-LiDAR helps some of us late depositors move up a bit sooner. Realistically that’s still early 2027 at best. My thought is that current R1 owners could be more likely to wait for LiDAR/RAP1 since they’re already enjoying a Rivian .

I have a reservation that I placed in Nov 2025, but am hoping I'm late enough in the queue to get a second model year, not the first. I'd like to get it with the smallest battery, but with the Lidar configuration. That said, I have purchased two R1Ses, one in 2024 then traded in for a 2026 in Jan, so I hope I have the option to not get bumped higher up in the queue as I don't want a non-Lidar edition.

The reason I want the smallest battery is because this R2 will just be for around town, if I have a longer trip I will take the R1S.

It was clear that it was the dual motor version. Price is an estimate.
This was answering the previous person who thought the RWD model was the launch edition.

As a very early R1S rez holder, I waited 50 mos. It was worth it, so all I can say is to be patient. Its way too soon to even know how many they can produce at max, Im not sure how they could produce more than their R1 throughput given current setup and service centers. I dont think you will see anything until at least 2028 as early rez holders might see something in late Q3 or Q4 2026. The GA plant is supposed to open in 2028 so mass production wont start until then realistically. My suggestion to them is to stop producing the R1S/T and go all in on the R2 until at they can get the GA plant open. Its their only answer to being successful and should use all resources to this end. I also think they should have special separate delivery centers and not have them go through the same service centers that current owners are needed to use.

I believe the configurator will be live on the 12th as well - they need to have some idea of what color choices people want, etc. so that they can start batching and planning production schedules.

Well, again, it's all speculation -- no one apart from RJ and crew know exactly, (and even then) about the timing of everything.

And as a matter of production realities, it's inevitable that as the production of a new vehicle coming down the line, if they are at all following the precepts of six sigma and continuous improvement, they will find areas of change to improve quality and/or efficiency. This is not at all to say the first off the line will be lemons, just that ones coming later should be better than the ones coming off first. Is it possible that the first ones off will be perfect and they find no way to make improvements? I would guess unlikely given Rivian's predilection for iteration.
