Ok Jon...it's about 80 here in Tacoma for the first time this year, and...my truck is near silent. Not only that, the ride feels softer and seems to soak up the familiar bumps in my area with ease. Other than a little steering wheel vibration and shake it feels like back in Jan/Feb when it was brand new.

This makes no sense!

It makes sense as Rivian is a software company that makes cars. Tahoma is opposite - Toyota is a car manufacturing company that makes a bit of software. See the difference?

Tomorrow I suppose to sell my R1T to Carnava, they did a good offer and the main thing that I do not like is streeing and wind noise. Both of them normal for R1T GEN1 (I trieд many R1Ts). My daughter, when tried Rivian, immidiately asked why the steering wheel moved so much when she goes over the bumps. Neither her Honda CRV or my X5 doing this.

Things that any other car manufacturer solved 30-50 years ago

Sorry, I'm referring to Tacoma the city. In the heat today, my R1T is driving and sounding really nice. That has not been the norm for the past month or two.

:) Sorry, I thought you are talking about a different truck. :) My fault

I am glad for you - my R1T wind noise at 80mph is something I really do not like, and I tried many other GEN1's - they are all the same. I heard GEN2 somewhat fixed it. Never drove one

I've owned both Gen1 and Gen2. Wind noise is better for me in Gen2. But I also never drive 80mph. 🤣

I haven't driven a quiet Rivian at 80 mph yet and that is a speed that people have mentioned is pretty common in Texas. My truck is almost whisper quiet (a little exaggeration) at 70 mph, by 75 it is an issue, by 80 I want to sell it.

The quality control with respect to wind noise is abysmally poor and absolutely shameful on their part. I looked at lot of trucks and you can almost tell without driving them which ones will be really bad. That isn't taking into account the ones that have the little triangular window issue.

I've spent hours chasing the wind noise and made significant improvements, but have asked Rivian to reset a piece when it goes back in for service.

I just got new halfshaft for both sides and hubs for both sides.

It does sounds better overall and they also changed the Dampeners and jounce lines on both sides which also helped.

I appreciate Rivian and my local service center taking care of this concern.

Your synopsis sounds exactly like my issue. It has gotten progressively louder over the last few thousand miles.

As for Teslas, I am very well aware of the halfshaft issues with the S/X. I always run my S in low and never accelerate hard unless the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. I am 3 years in and no halfshaft issues yet. I've followed the same approach with my Rivian, and I am now starting to experience the issue.

The good thing is I have a service visit setup to address the issues. My truck is pretty quiet compared to most of them. The half shaft noise is pretty minor still and most wouldn't notice it as I am hyper sensitive after having a Model S.

Our 2022 R1T got back from the shop this week. New half shafts and new hubs in the front. This seems to have addressed the gear-lash like feeling from the drivetrain. The service advisor explained that it was caused by slop developing in the half shaft splines and that the new half shafts are from a different manufacturer. I asked about getting the jounce lines replaced but they claimed that mine were good and that this was not related to the issue I was feeling.

so far the truck feels much more solid and predictable at very low speeds. Fingers crossed that it stays that way for a while 😉

If he lives in Austin and drives the tollway that goes to the east, then yes...85 is normal. Everywhere else no one is driving 85 on the reg. 70-75.

Yes, that the road I was referring to. The regular speed limits are 70-75 and people drive 5mph over on average. So 75-80 is a pretty normal in Texas, while super unusual on east cost.

Well that is interesting...different manufacturer for the halfshafts. Is this new, or did we already know about it?
We have documented different part numbers for the halfshafts G1/G2 and different motor configs, but I am unaware of new manufacturer.

I think it’s been known. A few people have mentioned it here. Someone else can correct me.

Ok, if this is not new I can say that the new manufacturer is not any better than the old. I have a new Gen2 Tri and the halfshafts are just as bad as in my old Gen1. In fact, the Gen2 went bad much faster than my Gen1.

We know it's a different interface than the Gen 1 Bosch motors (origin drivetrain), but I didn't realize the manufacturer had changed.

My Gen 1 quad had it's half shafts and hub assemblies replaced in November, granted I'm not launching it like I did when I took delivery, but thus far, not a single issue. Orignials, i started to notice play within a month or so of ownership, obviously not as pronounced by the time I had them replaced, but anyone paying attention to them could tell something was off.

Sorry this seems to be a never ending issue, but it also makes me very happy the R2 will be using standard trouble-free off the shelf splined half shafts that other vehicles have been using since the 1970's.
