Anyone seen this video? A guy is having a similar issue in his Model X. His exact issue is easily repeatable in any R1 if you set the suspension to high and aggressively accelerate. My thought is that you were never supposed to launch on high suspension.

Do you mean half-shafts are covered by the drivetrain warranty? I thought it was a bumper-to-bumper warranty only.
Anything that makes the vehicle mechanically go is part of the drivetrain warranty, which is 8 yr, 175k for Gen 1 Quads.

Exactly the same. Sounds like engineers need to figure out half-shaft designs for EVs. Way more torque than ICE.

I know all of our trucks will do that if you launch in high. Honestly, I really don't mind and accept that they weren't designed to do that. That's also why High is speed limited. My problem is when it does this at all speeds <30 mph when going over every little bump and transitioning to regen.

Rivian took me truck in immediately— in one day they were able to replace the half shafts, the ting washers, tighten bolts and something else that’s on the receipt of repair. It was all covered under drivetrain. I had bought 3rd party and the noises increased in 3 days.. totally fixed now no noises. Bravo Rivian and the outstanding crew at Burbank service!!!

Well, I guess I have 7 more years and 133,000 more miles left before it's coming out of pocket.

update #3

here is what Rivian texted me

Good afternoon, I wanted to update you on your vehicle.

The technician has found that the left front axle popped out, which was the metal on metal type noise you were hearing. The wheel speed sensors were getting different readings because of that, causing the vehicle to go into limp mode for safety reasons.

We inspected the right front axle as well and found no damage there. Additionally, he drained the fluid from the drive unit to inspect and found no damage there.

We are going to be replacing that left front axle and reinstalling and re-securing the right front axle.

We have parts in stock to make repairs. I am hopeful to have it completed by end of day tomorrow

They are on the way to deliver my vehicle back to me today. Should be here by noonish. Supposedly, everything is all fixed up and g2g. That is what they said last time and this happened so I do not have much faith :(

Jon- I know you have your working theory on the halfshaft noise and how warmer temps seem to bring out the noise more, and it lessens substantially in colder temps. In WA we are in back-and-forth season for weather. Some days, like the last few, we are up in the mid 70s. It's not uncommon for us to then dive back into the 40s for a stretch. (with nighttime lows in the upper 30s).

I've notice my halfshaft clatter being really bad during temperature transitions. For example, its loud and loose in the day or so of transition from 30s/40s up to 60s/70s. Then when ambient temps remain higher for an extended period, the noise gets better. If is goes cold and stays cold, it also improves. It's almost like a viscosity adjustment period, if that makes sense. I'll keep monitoring this, but just something I've noticed.

Oh, the temps have a huge impact on the noise. It was 84F here yesterday and it was much noisier than normal. I'm kind of used to it though.

My biggest issue is with the vibration under torque in standard height. Low height is perfect.

That and my dual motor engagement clunk that Rivian inadvertently introduced after an update back in January.

It has to be lubricant viscosity then. How can it not be easily solved if that it is the case? Have a lube that maintains its stability at higher temps.

I just got new halfshaft for both sides and hubs for both sides.

It does sounds better overall and they also changed the Dampeners and jounce lines on both sides which also helped.

I appreciate Rivian and my local service center taking care of this concern.
