Do the dual motor trucks not have this half shaft issue?
I can only speak to what I've read beyond my own experiences, but it doesn't seem to be as prevalent on other configurations, it was most common on the early Gen 1 Quad.

It often takes time for these issues to develop. Given that there are a lot more G1 quads out there, you'll likely see more issues as a result.

That doesn't mean G2 vehicles are immune to it. It might be that there aren't enough out there with enough miles to have any evidence of it yet.

There are new motors, and they changed things around, but that doesn't automatically mean it is better. You would hope so, but sometimes changes don't work out as planned. I would take a wait and see approach if I had a G2 truck and be vigilant listening for sounds that seem out of place. They could have the same issue but make a different sound or exhibit slightly different symptoms if they changed.

Since the suspension appears retrofitable to G1 trucks, it would be curious to see how much they really changed the halfshafts beyond just accommodating the new drive units.

Dual Motor R1S here -- had the knocking/clacking axle sounds when moving from a stop or coming to a stop. At a previous SC visit they installed ting washers, which addressed the noise for approximately ~5 months. Noise returned, so on this SC visit (car is currently there now) I had them take another look and they told me they're replacing the front half shafts.

So, doesn't seem Dual Motor is immune. I have friends with Dual Motors that don't have this issue, though ours has ~24k miles I believe -- definitely more than they do.

Let us know how it goes from this SC visit. I have an appt for this on May 21. My new R1T Tri only lasted about 1000 miles before this issue took center stage. My truck drives terribly now.

They just brought the car back home this morning. So far as I can tell the noise is gone again. We'll see how long it lasts.

They also needed to replace a jounce line in the rear (one which has previously been replaced) but they didn't have parts, so they'll pick it up in a week or two to address it. But I guess that's for another thread :D

Oh, and FYI -- the part number for the front half-shafts that were installed is as follows:

HALFSHAFT - FRT, R1 ENDURO Part# PT00087074-E

I googled it and hadn't seen -E posted anywhere, so maybe a new revision?

That's unfortunately an old part. You can pick em up on ebay for pretty cheap.

Thanks very much.
It's hard to have confidence in Rivian tech when people have issues with so little mileage. My model 3 has 187k km on it, and it's only recently that physical things are starting to wear out (front suspension linkages). 24k miles doesn't seem like a lot to me.

My Gen2 TriMax halfshafts, front drive unit, and wheel hubs only lasted about 1000 miles before they were hot garbage. My first R1T (Gen1 Quad) lasted 8000 miles. No crazy driving, off-roading, or launching on either vehicle.

If you have driveline components that last 24k miles, that's a big, big win.

This is pretty concerning for G2 trucks. I had heard how much better it would be when Rivian finally got away from the evil Bosch motors and have everything optimized for their Enduro motors. Maybe the G3 will be better.

Honestly, the more I read about the G2 trucks, the more inclined I am to just hold on to my G1. Maybe check out the Scout when it is finally out or see what Rivian does with the G3 trucks in a few years.

Did you have the vibration under heavy acceleration?

I have it under heavy acceleration when cold start, driving while turning. I'm in a loaner and it does it too. I'm fact the other loaner had the same issue. I think it's a they all do that.

SHHHhhhh! Soon they will say it is in spec, just like Tesla, if they all do that.

When Rivian finally agreed to replace my LE QM R1T for this problem I was adamant that the replacement vehicle be a DM R1T not another QM. My thought process was that the DM was based on a more traditional type differential system front and rear.and would hopefully not suffer from the same problems. At 7000 miles everything looks good but only time will tell. A vast improvement so far over my prior vehicle.

Good luck. I personally would say it is too early to tell. My quad didn't really show any evidence of it until it was over 10k miles. Even then, it isn't as bad as many people here have it. If I had to, I could live with it.

I think mine might be better than many because I tend to run it in low or lowest a lot more than most people do. Low is probably my default height position for 80-90% of the time. I found that helped my halfshafts survive on my Tesla Model S.

Sometimes (or maybe often) the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know...
