I installed the cross bars on my R1S according to the instructions. Even after locking them with a key, it still isn’t very secure. It shakes and rattles. The clip doesn’t snap down. Is this normal?

Unlock the crossbar and push/pull it down with force; you should hear a click... then you lock it.

That doesn't look like it is installed correctly.

Try this, unlock it and open the lever. Grab the end of the cross bar loop with one hand and pull down hard on it. I mean get your weight into it and pull it down hard enough the Rivian rocks a little and then push the tab closed. There are two clicks, the first you already have I think, the second is a very slight click. That level should be flush.

If this works (or not) look in the manual,.there is an adjustment that can be made with an Allen wrench. I haven't adjusted mine because I like the tight tolerance, but if it you need to adjust it, just do the bare minimum (like 1/2 turn at a time) so you don't have to much play in it

You likely need to adjust the mechanism on the bars; I had to do that to one of mine. There is a rubber foot that comes off exposing a set of hex-head screws. Adjust slowly! I did mine in 1/8 turn increments, both the same amount, counter-clockwise - I couldn't get the second click at first, but once I was finished, I could.

It took a few more tries. First click by pushing down. Then close the tab shut and wiggle it down hard. Tab has to be shut. Then I hear a second click.

There is a rubber footing but it doesn’t seem to slide off. So I do not see the hex head screws.

The rubber foot does come off. That’s what conceals the adjustment screws.

Just make a service appt and have them adjust it for you.

Yours definitely aren’t fully seated, but on mine I put clear silicon pipe wrap on top of the mounting points. It’s used to seal leaks for pipes in a pinch but I’ve never heard a peep out of mine. I mainly did it to keep the bars from a scratching the silver paint on the mounts. ?. Gosh I hate being OCD.

Too late! The silver mounts are already scratched. That’s impossible not to scratch.

You need to have a service ticket to fix - I had something similar and the silver mount was slightly out of alignment. Took two service appointments to resolve for me.

I finally figured it out. The key for me was after the first click, close the plastic tab down. The plastic tab won’t click down the 2nd time. I kept it closed down as it was not clicking in place, while simultaneously wiggled and pushed down the crossbars. Then I heard the 2nd click. But it only worked with the plastic tab pushed down. Then use the key to lock it in place.

Yeah mine was so tight I couldn't even do that, plus I thought that might be TOO tight for the mechanism, so I adjusted it as described in my video I linked above.
