Can the Rivian R1S actually drive itself? In this video, I’m taking my Gen 1 Rivian R1S out on the road to show off a massive upgrade: Comma 4 running sunnypilot with full longitudinal control.

If you’re a Rivian owner, you know that Driver+ has its limits. By installing the Comma 4 and the longitudinal upgrade kit, I’ve unlocked features the factory setup will never offer..including smoother lane centering, handsfree everywhere, and much more capable stop-and-go traffic handling, traffic light recognition. etc...

They don't need a module. Gen 1 has 10-100x more compute than a Comma.

If Rivian had used their own camera module instead of a really basic Mobile Eye unit on Gen1, they could've done at least this much in-house. But they didn't and they claim they don't have low enough level access to the hardware to do it easily, so they won't.

You would think @Rivian would want to. There's 150K Gen 1 on the road, they could offer a camera upgrade for a price and then sell you the subscription. Plus, they collect all that data to drive their future Ai needs. OpenPilot/SunnyPilot Is opensource software, just copy it over.

The mobile Eye is the limiting factor. They could easily replace those for cheap money.

Very timely video. My Comma 4 is literally showing up today, any minute. I'll be installing it this afternoon and using it to drive to an EV event tomorrow at Embry-Riddle. Hopefully... if I can swing the install.
