Periodically, my windshield wipers will activate when I go to put the truck in gear. It just swipes one time seemingly like I have triggered the one-time swipe button on the left toggle/lever. Anyone else seeing this? & I can' t imagine what could stop it less turning the wipers off. I do like the automatic setting but I just turned it to off for now. I suppose in summer that's prudent anyway

Allegedly, It's the wiper sensor needing to be recalibrated. I'm not sure if Rivian has ever come out publicly to state it, it's certainly not in the owner's guide.

100% part of the calibration routine. Normal and nothing you can do.

Clean your window. That helps.

Calibration. Same in my Mach-E and nearly all cars with newer automatic wipers

I’m in the camp it is detecting something on the window. Seems like the only time mine does it is on windy days when the vehicle looks dusty.

Just my personal observations with my R1S.

Edit, mine has never done it leaving my garage, only when it is outside.

If you're experiencing the "startup wipe," are your wipers set to auto? I generally leave them set to off unless I'm using them, but occasionally I forget to turn them off. A day or two later I might get the startup wipe. If I leave them off this doesn't seem to happen.

Mine does it only when the windshield is dirty with things such as pollen, dust or dried condensation marks. I just end up turning automatic wipers off until it actually rains as the dry wipe will cause scratches eventually rather not risk it.

I just turn mine off till I need em. I have manually activated wipers on my other cars. These automatic ones are annoying sometimes.

Like others have said, this is standard for these vehicles. In CA, we have definite rain and dry seasons. During the dry season I turn the wipers from Auto to off so they don't do this

Yes, this is the “courtesy swipe.” I was going to submit this issue to the forum, but I contacted Rivian instead and related my experience. I was elated that they knew the problem and explained it to me in about one minute. Any dust on the windshield will initiate a swipe on start-up or randomly on the road. What a smart car! Haha.

Yes and I think the angle of the sun amplifies the dirt. Depends how I'm parked.
