Just one more reason for me to never trust these “self driving” systems. As far as I’m concerned, all of them are still in beta testing.
Same. I don’t understand the zealotry for FSD among Tesla acolytes.

Until we have access to L4 tech—where the auto mfr assumes full legal liability in the event of an accident while using their tech—I’m not interested.

For all the talk about D+ and FSD allowing for a more relaxed drive, if I have to monitor everything the vehicle does and keep my eyes on the road, what do I need the software for? So I can take my hands off the wheel? Please.

For me, using HWA is as relaxing as when I was riding shotgun while my kids did their first freeway driving with their learner’s permit. Like with FSD and HWA, I also never knew if my kid was going to steer towards the center divider or slow down irrationally.

If we ever get to true L4 with eyes-off, I’m interested. Until then, it’s just comical how oversold this L2 tech is. It’s smarter L2, but it’s still only L2.

Honest question: Did Tesla ever remove the “beta” designation from FSD? Never understood why anyone would pay 4 to 5 figures for software which the vendor admits isn’t yet finished. Tesla gets both protection from some legal liability if things go wrong, and opportunity for greater access to customer data when the FSD is being used.

I have a different take on Driver+ and Autopilot. I have several trips using both between 5k and 7.5k miles. I only use them on the longer stretches of open highway. If the road is busy or going through cities I drive myself.

I find a real difference where monitoring the system on open highways really reduces fatigue for me and it is not uncommon for me to do 1000 mile days.

My only wish is that Rivian would change the G1 vehicles to rely more on road markings and less on mapped roads like the Tesla Autopilot does. My R1S still requires me to take over in odd scenarios where the Tesla does not. Some of the places the R1S will ask me to take over appear to be sections were construction has recently completed where roads are well marked but may have not been remapped yet.

If this set up works for you, I’m happy. Seriously. I simply can’t find relaxation when there is the constant possibility that the system will decide to quit, with the car “braking”—I use max regen and the disconnect of the car’s control over the accelerator makes the car feel like sudden braking, on top of everything else going on.

I find this more fatiguing than simply driving the car myself. When I know what is going to happen next, I’m not wondering when things might go sideways. That’s why I say I’m not interested until things advance to L4.

But that’s just me. If it works for you, great.

I do hope we have true L4 driving by the time I’m in my 80s. Having reliable and affordable transportation is going to be a must to maintain independence. Other than that, I really enjoy driving and don’t really want the car to do that for me.

Nobody likes the bumper to bumper traffic congestion driving, the Mercedes L3 software handles that. In fact, that’s really all it can do. There must be a car in front of you, there must be daylight, no inclement weather, and the speed can’t exceed 40 mph.

But it will work eyes-off in those very specific conditions—provided you’re driving in CA or NV, the only states which have provided approval. And you’re paying a hefty monthly fee for the software.

Under those restrictions, this is not close to being a product for the masses. I’ll happily drive until then.

I test drove the model 3 when it came out and the self driving felt like it was going around corners in octogon pattern. It was really unpleasant. Driver + is better than that original autopilot but it needs work

I think this is setting a record for the longest interval between updates. Maybe Rivian is mulling over the possibility of including the kick turn for the Gen 1’s in this update 😂 Kind of an update to the update.

Its usually in testing by now. It’s not deployed to any vehicle on ElectaFi. Also the app update seems delayed as well.

Interesting. Wonder what the deal is. I guess we just got spoiled with the monthly updates. Maybe this will be the new normal. I guess there is only so much they can do.

"When it came out" is the operative part of your comment. It isn't like that at all any more.

Could also mean the vehicle update has functionality tied to the new mobile app version.
