Anyone considering trading their R1T for an LE R2?

An honest question. I have my Gen2 2025 R1T-Dual Large that I do love, but I did have those pangs about something bright, shiny and new. As I am aging, I know enough not to ACT on those pangs...

I've said it before and I will say it again; I had THOUGHT my R1T was going to be my "forever" truck; but the reality of the technology and life tells a different story. I'm in my mid-60's. Where will EV's be in 8-10-12 years? Where will my abilities be in that time frame?

I hear you! I'm almost 68, and still use the R1T for hauling stuff and doing projects, but wonder how long the technology of the gen 1 will be supported. It clearly will not have the autonomy that the R2 has. I am also wondering if on the top level launch R2 that currently does not have the LIDAR whether that can be added later? I saw one video where the Rivian team pointed out the front of the roof line and where the roof and windshield on the R2 are designed to accommodate the LIDAR unit so it does not bulge up above the roof line. That made me wonder if it can be added on later for the launch edition vehicles?? They are giving forever autonomy plus with the launch vehicles. Would that potentially mean that down to road addition of LIDAR hardware? Probably dreaming, but that would push me to get a launch unit now for sure. Having full self drive down the road at our age is a true plus. My brother in law has progressive ALS and he has a Tesla mainly so he can still remain mobile. Sucks to get old, but technology like this can extend the joy of living!!

No, I have a truck for truck stuff. I like my interior clean and not thinking twice of throwing bags of dirt in the back. I also enjoy not having a vertical limit to crap I put in the bed or having to disassemble something as simple as a bike to make it fit. I have had SUVs in the past and it's just a constant source of irritation to me.

Having a Gen 1 T does have me interested in the upgraded tech and innovation of a new Rivian at a much lower price point but not so much to lose all that functionality.

It would likely have to be an R2T for me to consider the jump.

Mid 60’s here and disabled vet. I won’t live much longer. I’m gonna enjoy while I can. Even level 2 driving helps me a lot on road trips.

I'm surprised there's so much questioning around why anyone would ever want to trade in their R1T for the R2. There are tons of reasons for me:

• I don't need/want a pickup truck. When I got the R1T 4 years ago, Rivian's were the only option on the market for electric vehicles that were off-road capable. I absolutely didn't need a 3-row 7-seat SUV not having kids, so the truck was a great option (especially at the lower price at the time).
• Smaller size. The R2 will fit better in my garage and be 100% easier to park in cities. It will have a tighter turning radius. It's smaller battery for roughly similar range means less electricity cost, the list goes on for benefits of a smaller size that still meets one's needs.
• Better utility for my needs. Again, I don't need a pickup truck, and for my needs more interior cabin storage is better than exterior truck bed storage. Even just wanting to long haul taller objects without being exposed to the weather will be easier in R2 vs. the truck bed. Skis are easier with more interior cabin space, my guitar + amplifiers are large but need to be kept out of weather, stacking suitcases, etc.
• Car camping. R2 will be awesome for camping inside, and this isn't possible with R1T.
• Dog + People. I currently have a hammock in the rear cabin for my dog, limiting transporting the dog + more people. With R2, I can have the dog in the rear cargo area and bring more people along.

I've absolutely loved my R1T over the last 4 years, and I adore Rivian as a company, brand and product. I'm so happy there's an opportunity for me to trade in my R1T to get an R2, it honestly feels more like an upgrade for me.

I originally bought my 25 R1T to get me ahead on the R2 waiting list and to have a Rivian to drive in the meantime… BUT, now I love my truck so much I’m not sure I want to get rid of it.
I wanted a Tri-R2 which isnt even an option at the moment so I’m happy to keep my truck and postpone the decision.

I have thought about it. But having two R2's in the household seems pointless. My wife is upgrading her Model 3 to an R2, and just out of curiosity I did a trade in estimate from Rivian and they offered me $1k more than my lease buyout from Chase.

I love the convenience of the truck, the tech, etc. The only reason I have thought about an SUV (like the R2) is that when I go to the office, my surfboards are unsecured, sitting in the bed and also exposed to the sun. It would be nice to be able to lock it up in the car instead. If the bed was just a little longer I could do that in the bed, but it's just a bit too short for most of even my shorter boards...

But I just hate the idea of having two of the same cars in the household...so I'm still not sure lol

I lived in Tahoe when I got my R1T LE. Now I live in San Francisco, and I'm soon moving to a new place with a garage that won't fit the R1T. Plus the R1T is pretty annoying to park in SF, often you can't find a parking spot long enough for it.

So yeah I'm looking hard at the R2, though I'd even prefer something smaller (R3X?).

I personally woudn't give up the ride height, power closing frunk, and the nicer interior materials of the R1. However, we are adding an R2 to our garage for the other driver in the house that none of what I said matters to LOL.

Absolutely; I've always wanted a 4Runner, and the R2 perfectly fits the bill; my '22 R1T doesn't have the bed length for my bikes, R2 does. It's tough to cart timpani in the truck (unless I turn 1-2 of them upside down, and that's not good); R1's have a big ass, and I want something a bit shorter/narrower to maneuver in tighter spaces. I don't use all the capability of the R1, so someone else will enjoy her more. I'm also looking forward to the increase level 3/4 autonomy, which my Gen1 R1 just can't do.
PLUS: in selling and refinancing, I'll reduce my balance on the loan. Works for me!

Unsure here. I've got a "as soon as the button went live" reservation but two years ago assumed R2 might be my wife's next vehicle. However we picked up a PDM Max R1S for her last fall and no way she'll downsize. My OG LE R1T warranty is about to expire but the great ATL SC folks took care of some concerns at my recall visit and I think it will be good to go for a while. Plus the original spec quad price & features are still hard to give up. Definitely interested in checking out the LE R2 as soon as possible to see if it can tempt me though.

Being a composer, I want to know why you are hauling timpani around (as a job, for fun, something else?)! I remember the last time I helped haul some around, a moving van was rented...

I love my T (26’ Tri Max), and love having a truck (my wife won’t let go of the R1S and still need it for family trips/camping), but I’m also interested in the $50k differential with the LE R2. Anyone else considering swapping? 4400# tow covers my boats, and the S can do 7700# so could always use that if we ever pursued one of the fancy EV campers (~7000#). Hmm…

I'm one of those considering the swap, but honestly, now that I'm getting close to that becoming reality, I'm currently 60/40, leaning towards keeping my R1T. The R2 rear window would be amazing for my dogs, giving them an open-air view and freeing up my rear seat for humans, but damn, do I love my truck, and the air suspension is a big part of the R1 experience and my love for the R1. If I had a '26 Trimax like you and I was comfortably affording it, that would be a hard NO on trading down to the R2.
As for me, I will test-drive the R2 and make my decision after seeing it in person and driving it. Or, my R1T could turn into a maintenance money pit after 100K, pushing me to give it up. Another factor is that next year, many R1T/R1S leases will be ending, and Gen1 owners like me will start to see a flood of used Gen2 vehicles entering the marketplace.
