NC has direct sales bans that Tesla got grandfathered into bc they got in before NCADA found out early on. SC has total direct sales bans but I found out from the SC Rivian Facebook group you can take delivery in SC bc of a legal loophole where you “bought the car” in Illinois bc of electronic paperwork or something. Unsure about NC, I’d ask people who already took delivery of R1s in NC.

Well, they got one license (Raleigh) grandfathered in. They got shut down for number two (Charlotte) a decade ago in a fight against Hendrix and Sonic (Leilani Munter showed up to support Tesla for some of the legal challenges). For a while they had to technically run all Charlotte sales through Raleigh (including my Model 3s in 2018 and 2019). They later finally won the right to have six total in the state thanks to a one off law that gave them an exception. Completely stupid control by the big auto dealer groups.

It's not a conspiracy. This exact thing happened with R1 and there was quite a bit of kvetching from long time reservation holders about people with more recent reservations getting a car before them.

This time they were just smarter about how they justify "the process."

I don't recall there being any promise from Rivian about order determining delivery on the R1s. A lot of assumptions here and complaining about the "friends and family" program though.

"... however we are not offering factory pickup at this time."
Wait, I live 12 miles from the factory and my nearest SC is at the factory. But customers are not allowed to set foot in the Normal Service Center. For service, I drop off and pickup my Rivian at the factory lobby.

Catch 22. Here we go again. After waiting 57 months for my R1S Adventure quad, I became convinced that living near the factory was a curse, not an advantage, for converting an early reservation into a delivery.

Same, I'm in Washington, IL; gen 1 R1T owner; day 1 reservation, but seemingly will get deprioritized even though it costs them nothing to "deliver" it to me. RIP.

The language on this point does not say near. It says Areas surrounding Rivian Service + Demo Centers... Note that Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, and of course all of Colorado together clearly define an area surrounding Rivian's Denver facilities. Folks living in any of those states are hence front-of-the-line, right?

My conclusion is that the released statement means precisely nothing other than whatever the folks working in the queue sorting office decide is convenient to their purposes of the moment. And TBH, given that they are trying to balance a whole bunch of different prioritization criteria I'm not entirely without sympathy to that approach.

In any case, for the first several months of delivery we're probably not going to see all that many cars going out anyway in relation to the number of buyers who do not want an LE for any one of about 30 different reasons.

Areas surrounding Rivian Service + Demo Centers will generally receive invitations sooner as this allows us to deliver vehicles more quickly in the early ramp.

I don't really understand this. Are they actually delivering cars to people's houses? I always assumed that Rivian shipped the car to the 'dealer lot', i.e., a sales center, and the buyer went there to pick it up. In which case, why would Rivian care whether you live just down the block or 500 miles away? (All of this aside from the separate issue of how they would prefer to batch deliveries to any particular sales center.)

I'm not putting much into the "near a service center" comment. This was the same story with the R1 launch yet somehow I took delivery in Alabama in June 2022. Four years later I own two and Rivian still doesn't know Alabama exists, so I am hopeful history repeats itself.

Frankly I am most excited about the test drives. Youtuber "influenced" tests are notoriously useless in the real world since most of them aren't even real car people and simply gush mindlessly over everything. For me the best aspect of my LE R1T is the driving dynamics so I'm hoping R2 Performance is much more like my OG than our DMP R1S. Ultimately no review other than my own will be able to answer that question.

If you read the announcement, it states deliveries will happen on June 9th. For this to happen the people that are getting those cars have already received the invite to select color and options along with sort financing.
