No expert but when Tesla can fabricate a model Y in 2.5 hours start to finish seems we have a long away to go with production line efficiency for the R2 to be profitable. This would be data from Teslas most efficient manufacturing line. Their goal is a vehicle coming off the line every 30-40 seconds. What am I missing

The Model Y is a stripped down to the bones basic car. It's affordable but bland.
Definitely less luxury than a Rivian but it’s a quality vehicle and it is profitable. There are millions on the road world wide so they are doing something right. And price is right at $50k.

Considering the disparity in time I would like more details on what counts as the starting point for each. Finish line is easy.

Can’t find much more data and I agree tasks like starting with previously painted bodies is possible. They do stress they are using 95% automation production for speed and quality. Even though many of us don’t care for the CEO his antics, his ability to manufacture efficiently is pretty spectacular

Maybe the new "stripper" Model Ys that were released after the federal tax credit ended, but not the other models. Displays up front and back, heated and cooled seats up front, heated in the rear, heated steering wheel, power liftgate in the rear, panoramic roof, matrix LED headlights, large frunk, wireless charging, plenty of storage, adjustable angle rear seats, FSD, all wheel drive, performance models, rear or AWD, double pane glass all around, and a wealth of software features.

Do tell me what is so "basic" compared to an R2? The fact that the tailgate glass doesn't roll down or the rear quarter windows don't pop out?

Styling is subjective. I personally think that the R2 looks light-years better than the Model Y.

However, I was responding to, and specifically bolded the portion in the comment that the Model Y is somehow a stripped-down, basic car -- what I would take that to mean it is somehow severely lacking in features/creature comforts compared to its peers.

The build time difference is easily explained with the fact that there are less steps to build R2 over R1. The very simple fact that body on frame requires more steps than an unitized body where there is no mating between the frame and the body.

Additionally, R2 is much less contents than R1 and was designed to be simpler. I am actually surprised that the total time is still 15 hrs. It's only 17% improvement over R1.

The other thing, why do we have to turn just about every thread into Tesla/Elon vs Rivian/RJ? It ruins the thread for those of us who wants to focus on what Rivian is doing and is about, and not have to put up with noise of Tesla/Elon bashing.

Well... that old adage comes to mind, "You can have it good or you can have it fast. You can't have it good and fast". I prefer good.

Also, lest we forget, Tesla had many years to perfect and streamline their assembly process. Rivian is still getting that engine rolling.

Apples to oranges. There aren’t equal number of parts.
